Vivitar light meter advice

I picked up an old Vivitar 45 light meter for next to nothing and

would appreciate some advice. Does anyone know the function of the

rocker switch on the side? It looks like pressing the side of the

rocker furthest from the sensor generates a light reading whilst

pressing the other side gives a battery test? I presume the battery

is functional if the meter needle swings across to the silver square?

Also what battery do I need? It has a 1.5 Volt Toshiba MR44. Is this

the correct voltage or has someone put in a close substitute? Lastly

the EV range on the dial is 0 to 19. Is this the true EV range?

I had one of the old Vivitar light meters which I felt were very good. Mine ws off a full stop when I got it, but it was repaired under warranty. I lost it sometime ago, but if I remember correctly, the rocker switch would lock the reading.
