Olson High speed flash units for hummingbirds

Unexpectedly there has been more interest in my HSF units over the past year than there has been for the previous 25!

As there now seem to be sufficient customers to build a batch of HSF units - I am now planning to construct a few during the latter part of 2007.

It would be useful if you could e-mail me directly on mobiusltd@aol.com if it is likely that you would want to purchase HSF this year together with the quantity you would require. Please do not contact me unless you are a serious potential purchaser for 2007.

To refresh your memory, the units charge in around 5 seconds, weigh around 10 pounds, measure 220 x 168 x 106 mm externally, give out 200 Joules in 1/40,000 second, and are powered from a 12 volt battery (user-supplied).

Units will cost 1765 pounds sterling each plus post & packing.

Regards,

Prof. Greg Parker

Totally unexpectedly I have been contacted by an equipment manufacturer who is interested in manufacturing my HSF units!!!

I shall be talking to the manufacturer next week [beginning of September 2007] - and who knows - if we can come to an agreement we may even see these HSF units finally appearing in the marketplace, some 20 odd years after building the first ones:)

My last post on this one here??

Today I had discussions with the potential manufacturers of these HSF units and it looks like we will be going ahead. The first batch of HSF units should be available this Christmas [2007] if all goes as planned.

If you have an interest in purchasing true (portable) high speed flash equipment and would like to register your interest please e-mail me at mobiusltd@aol.com with your requirements and contact details.

All the best,

Greg Parker
00Mp9e-38944884.jpg.7db6d0b80766bb64805ab5046e295d7d.jpg

Two corrections - the post above was not the last one on the subject -AND - whenever I said 1/40,000 second above - I meant to say 40 microseconds. Apologies for any confusion this has caused.

I have only just signed an agreement with equipment manufacturers for production and distribution of these HSF systems and you can find them on http://www.firstlightsystems.co.uk

All the best,

Greg Parker

Today [February 25th 2009] I took delivery of 3 high speed flash units from highspeedflash dot com. I now have 2 x Pro units and 1 x Ultra unit for HSF experimentation. Just need to build a couple of trigger circuits and get some cable in to start some interesting work.
By the way - the quality and build of the units is far better than I was anticipating - these guys have done a REALLY great job!

I also quickly took a shot with the Ultra unit but only changed the distance to 3-feet so result was highly under-exposed. I should have used ISO 400, but short on time today with other things to do.
So here is the "Ultra" result triggered by a sound trigger. Looks like these units do the business, they are available from www.highspeedflash.com so now it's just down to you guys :)

July 4th 2009 - just been playing with 3 "Ultra" units in the garage this afternoon. They punch out a LOT of light - all in 9 microseconds too :)

I just spent today getting some high speed flash images of water drops. Rather than put the pictures up here, please just check out my Flickr site to see what I've been up to at this address http://www.flickr.com/photos/12801949@N02/
These images were taken using 3 "Ultra" units from http://www.highspeedflash.com a Canon 40D and a Canon 100mm macro lens. A long way to go to match Martin Waugh's standard, but then these shots were all taken manually with an electronic switch (to fire the camera and flashes) in one hand, and a syringe full of water in the other - no synchronisation, no triggering, no delay - zilch.

Today I had some fun in a photographic studio with the "Ultra" units taking very high speed shots of bursting balloons full of water. Take a look at these results on my Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/12801949@N02/ I think you'll be amazed at the stopping power (and the light output) of these units. All photos taken with a Canon 40D and 17-55mm lens at ISO 200 and f#22.

I was just curious as to why they wouldn't list the prices...they only have two types of flash units--the Pro and the Ultra. Since they won't bother to list the price, I have a suspicion that they are outrageously expensive. I think I'll keep my old, but still functional Olson units.

I decided to email highspeed flash.com and ask for the prices for the products. The price for the Pro model is $2400 while that for the Ultra is $4000. This is quite expensive in my opinion, since you need a minimum of three units for effective lighting (and four unit would be better). You can achieve similar results with regular flash units, except they do have to be much closer to the subject than the specialized units such as the older Olsen flash heads or the Microflash Pro or Ultra. I'm going to try to attach a photo that I took with four Nikon SB28s.

Sorry to hear you feel the units are quite expensive. My perception is that for a unit that is quite unique, and with no competitors with regard to performance - they are very reasonably priced. My opinions on trying to use regular flashguns to do the job of specialist units can be read on the highspeedflash dot com web site.

I just had to put up this latest image taken using 3 Ultra flash units and a sound trigger. Looks like the paranormal at work. Note that the pellet has penetrated the right hand side of the balloon completely, but at this moment in time no water can be seen escaping :)

The guys at highspeedflash dot com http://www.highspeedflash.com/ have considerably dropped the prices of their units (for Christmas?). So if you want a unique portable high-power high-speed flash unit for your photographic assignment - now is the time :)
You can see a selection of images taken with the 9-microsecond "Ultra" unit on my Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/12801949@N02/
Have a great 2010 - after all it's the year we make contact!

Greg Parker

00VAmb-197821584.jpg.8a08b39169b9aa4bc3ff033cbab6d3e6.jpg

03/07/2013
An image I took of a water drop collision and a bubble burst using 3 "Ultra" units is in this year's Royal Photographic Society's Science Exhibition.
In the last couple of months highspeed flash dot com have sold over 15 units, many to a company specialising in "bullet time" photography. High-speed bullet-time work - great idea!
