ronnie_pettit1
Is anyone our there using screw on filters with the Bronica PS 40mm lens? (95mm threads) I am trying to shop for a UV and Polarizer. Can anyone advise on a filter make that will not vignette and will still allow the use of the screw on lens cap? Obviously the ability to use a lens cap is important to me as well as a polarizer that will not vignette on the wide angle optic. Thanks. david_henderson
The Hoya super multicoated PRO 1 polariser is about the slimmest I've found and it has a front screw thread (well OK, not a very deep one, but most of the others have none.). Whether it will prevent vignetting with the 40mm I don't know- I'd imagine so but no guarantees. You do of course have to consider that polarisers and very wide angle lenses often make unhappy combinations due to differential polarisation across the frame. A neutral density grad might be a better way of getting more sky colour.
kelvin_chao
Just a comment on the metal thread-on lens cap. I have the PS 50mm and I, as others, have found the thread-on cap a hazard. The cap swims around on the threads until they engage and at times the cap slips thus dragging itself across the front element. When removing the cap I have found that the cap and filter may stay together and the filter unscrews from the lens. A suggestion: ditch the screw-on cap. ronnie_pettit1
Thanks for the suggestions guys....I like the ND grad idea for sky on the angle, although my specific need is more for water (mountian streams) and I will usually leave the polarizer off when possible. Kelvin...if you toss the screw on cap, what do you use?...a generic snap on cap?
kevin_ing
I may be wrong, but I think Bronica didn't change the optical formula between the S and PS versions of the 40mm lens. The older lenses have the built in "hood" and older coating technology, but I think optically they are the same. For what it's worth, I use the Bronica 95mm polarizer (not a circular polarizer) on my Zenzanon-S 40mm lens and it does not vignette.
film_chan
Hi Ronnie: I have a Bronica PS40 lens too. I use the 95mm Heliopan UV and linear pol filters. These filters are the non-slim versions, and I have no problem with vignette. Since they are non-slim filters, the Bronica clip-on (Tamron style) lens cap that came with the lens stays on with no problem. My lens is about 3-4 years old. I guess it came with screw-on caps before. Regards, Film Chan
geoff_powers1
Ronnie: I didn't see your question when I posted a similar one regarding use of an MC 40mm lens on an ETRSi see: "40mm MC+polarizer on ETRSi=vignetting?". Were you able to overcome the problem? I'm still experimenting with solutions. I was using a UV filter AND a polarizer together. Most people who e-mailed me said that using both filters was causing my problem. I'm awaiting the results of my photofinisher's prints of pictures I took over the weekend using only the polarizer. Hope your problem was solved. Geoff Powers
