reidthaler
I’ve diagnosed that my Nikon LS 4000 scanner needs a FireWire chip costing $185 for the repair. For the price of the repair, and selling my LS 4000 for parts, I could buy the Nikon V. I know the Nikon V won’t accept the bulk slide holder, which doesn’t really bother me. Are there other improvements in the Nikon V that would warrant getting it instead of repairing the LS 4000? I think the Nikon V is next version of ICE, but don’t know that that would make much difference since most of what I have are old Kodachromes. I know that the V won't do multi-scanning, but don't know if that's really significant. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated! Reid
ben_hutcherson
I have a dead 4000 that I've never been motivated to repair because I don't have the uncut roll feeder or the bulk slide loader. I'd like to have both of those, and have kept my 4000 around on the off chance I find one of those accessories for an affordable price. I don't know that the V is a big image quality jump-to be honest I have a III that I've used also(it was handy to have a second scanner in an alternate location) and even though on paper there's a big jump from a III to a V, the end results didn't really bear that out once I'd cleaned the dusty mirrors in my III. I have a V so it's a moot point for me, but if I were shopping it's what I'd get for no other reason than that USB is a lot easier to deal with in 2020, and also that you don't have that fragile Firewire chip. I treat my 8000 with kid gloves because I don't want to deal with that expensive repair. As a side note, supposedly the 9000 will do ICE with Kodachrome, but I don't know how good it is, and of course that's a big step up in price from a V. I THINK there's a 5000 available that can take the same bulk adapters as the 4000, but they seem fairly uncommon and I expect would carry a big premium over a standard V. reidthaler
Yes, the 500 is going for over $1K on ebay. Seems like cult obsession.
