Blue stains on negatives (orange on positives)

What could be the cause of thoses stains?

 

It shows as blue on color negatives. If you look closely there are small ones too.

The sharpness of the little 'U' shape looks as if something contacted the film during processing.

 

Colour chemicals will react with a variety of metals (aluminium, copper and iron in particular) to form a stain. So my guess is that some rust or other metallic contaminant got into the tank with the film.

This is a scan of the same frame done 8 years ago with a different scanner (Plustek). No IR Cleaning.

 

 

 

 

This was done today with a Nikon Coolscan. No IR Cleaning.

So you've had this staining for 8 years? What do you expect can be done about it now?
