OK:

I posted this on the camera equipment forum and didn't get a

response. This is very cryptic cause this isn't a puter formum. I

just wantedto hear your experience.

"What color management system are you using? How do you

like it? How are you syncing ? Any suggestions will be

welcomed. "

Thanks,

I use Mac OS X and print from an Epson 2200. Monitor is a LaCie CRT

calibrated by the Pantone ColorVision/OptiCAL system Instead of using the

Epson driver, the printer gets it's instructions from ImagePrint software. The

software includes many paper profiles and the company can make profiles for

the papers you like to use. Using PS 7 softproof feature and the above stuff,

I've been able to get satisfactory results. Ian Lyon's site- Computer Darkroom

has a number of great tutorial on color management that will help you fill in

the gaps on how all of this hardware and software are integrated. I'm still

struggling on how to achieve WYSIWYG on photos uploaded to this forum.

Many of the member of this forum seem to have color, contrast and density

fidelity on their images down pat- any pearls on this issue, I would

appreciate . Hope this helps.

Art: Color management - Adobe Gamma control panel to calibrate monitor, Epson's own ColorLife paper profile for my printer profile (Epson ColorLife or Ilford Classic Galerie Gloss/Pearl paper on an Epson 1280) - black-ink-only B&W prints onto either Tetenal Portrait Pearl or Epson Matte (any variety) with no profile - just "printer color management" set at Gamma 1.8. I use the Colormatch color space (as opposed to Adobe 1998) because its gamut is a closer match to what the printer can reproduce - fewer bright colors but more subtle variations available between colors - think "Delacroix" as opposed to "Warhol" color.

This after a couple of months of trial and error testing.

Sal: Yeah - my uploads always looked dark. Photoshop uses the monitor profile you create when calibrating, but web browsers often don't.

What I do now, when preparing an image for posting, is set Photoshop's "proof view" to "Windows RGB" which makes the image appear darker even in Photoshop. Then I use curves to adjust the brightness upwards until it looks right. This seems to correct just about exactly for the difference between Photoshop's normal view and how web browsers show the image.

Sal and Andy:

Thanks for the input. I will look at what you suggested and give it

a try. I am actually getting fairly good prints; just not as good as I

would like.

I have a Mac dualie, running OS 10.2.3, Epson 2200 and PS 7. I

have set-up using MacBeth. I have been able to get the scanners

to match the printer; problem has been the moniter. I got the

CRT working but it died. I am now back to the LCD screen. It

always gives a lighter picture than the final print. I have gotten

good at guessing the difference, but not perfect. I guess it is like

starting over and learning something new. I will have to work with

it.

Thanks again for the input.
