The recent posting of a Leitz Cafeteria Tray for auction on ebay got

me thinking. Really thinking!

This forum needs something--a symbol--to denote our sincere

appreciation to those that moderate, foster, promote harmony, and

otherwise facilitate one of the best photography newsgroup sites in

the known universe.

Think about it. The National Football League has the Lombardy

Trophy. There's the Stanley Cup--coveted by all the world's hockey

players. And don't forget Jimmie Carter's Nobel Prize.

And by golly, those shade tree organizations got nothin' on us.

Therefore, with that in mind, I propose an annual award. An award

with great meaning. Something to rival Pulitzer, Oscar, Nobel, Tony,

the Stanley Cup, and Mr. Blackwell. Our very own Leica Photography

Forum award..

I hereby solicit the following from the forum membership:

Ideas for said trophy.

I can think of nothing more treasured and valuable. Nothing more

revered. Nothing more symbolic and coveted that the Leitz Cafeteria

Tray recently seen at auction on the four letter auction site.

And, I'd be willing to contact the seller and purchase that Leica

Tray and donate it to the Forum. And each year afterwards, that tray

be awarded to the forum member deemed "Most Important" by Tony and

Josh. Since Jack Flescher has gone digital, and he was the most

charitable member the group has ever known, someone has to step up in

the philanthropy department.

But first, I like to hear some suggestions from the Forum. Plus,

someone may have already purchased the aforementioned tray.

Therefore, if any of you have a particularly great idea for a Trophy,

Symbol, or Icon that can define us now's the time to suggest it.

And I nominate Tony Rowlett the first year's recipient and keeper of

the proverbial flame. (Things generally store better in a cold

environment, and where better than Alaska)

So instead of arguing about government policy, and war, and the like,

we can shred ourselves to pieces arguing over who's who in the Leica

Forum, and Who should have received the award this year. And what

will Cher be wearing at the awards ceremony etc.

What do you think? Anybody got any idea's out there?.

David:

I think the idea is great. I would like to further add that since the tray is such a firm, stiff item for shipping, it should be part of the container that holds a portfolio of photos. Each years recipient is to add ONE photo of their choice to travel with the tray, and as the years go by, the photo collection grows with it.

Cheers.

I have not seen the tray on ebay however, a little warning:

Available here in Holland and probably in more European countries (don't know about the USA) are office products (amongst others stackable plastic trays to put in letters/papers) made in Germany by a company called Leitz. However, this company has nothing to do at all with a certain manufacturer of photographic cameras and lenses. I would not be surprised if the offered item was made by the office product company.

We could have more than one award each year, e.g. for:

- Optimism

- Politeness

- Patience

- Helpfulness

- Brevity

- Political neutrality

- (etc.)

Any suggestions as to who might be the winners for the last 12 months?

(This is deliberately intended to start a flame war, so please delete it, Tony!) ;-)

David: This is a great idea and a boost to the Forum's esprit de

corps. I propse that we call it the LEica FORum prize just as Leitz

and Barnack christened the great great great great

great..granddaddy of the M7. The LEIFOR prize, like the Nobel,

should be given out by committee. I nominate Tony, Al Kaplan,

Marc, Olivier, Elliot and Jay for the board.
