Hi Isaac,
From the sounds of your equipment, it looks like you do quite a bit of work with flash.
Two questions:
I was told at a local shop that hot-shoe flash units aren't really powerful enough to incorporate things like umbrellas. Has this been your experience? Do you generally go with the umbrellas or more often just the Spectra Light diffusers?
What sort of wireless radio trigger (plus receivers) are you using? Do you know if they are compatible with the Sony HVL 56-AM?

Hi Dave,
I have found the flash units powerful enough when shooting through umbrellas, but I suppose it depends on your applications and the proximity of the flash setup to the subject. They do tend to get overwhelmed if direct sunlight is involved, but I try to shoot in the shade or indoors most of the time.
I (mis)use the Spectra Light diffuser as a reflector, wasting a lot of power, but I like the soft lighting when I bounce the flash off the translucent panel. This is used mostly with a single flash on-camera, and I definitely use this configuration more due to its flexibility. The umbrellas are used with the light stand and GorillaPod for more intricate setups with both flashes.
I am using the cheapo PT-04 type triggers from eBay. I suggest getting the latest versions for these triggers, which are physically more stable due to a lower profile.
I got them to work on the Sony platform with the normal hotshoe adapter for the camera, but for the flash units, I suggest searching eBay for the TF324 adapters, which have a hotshoe screw-lock, and are infinitely more secure than the normal types (which tend to slide off very easily).

My usual setup is:
Sony a100
Minolta a-7 w/ grip (Maxxum 7)
Minolta 70-210mm f/4
Minolta 50mm f/1.4
Minolta 24-50mm f/4
an 8gb card in the a100, and a couple 4gb ones in teh bag
Minolta remote shutter release
as many rolls of film as I can stuff into the top pouch of my Lowepro Slingshot 200

I also usually have a folder, Holga, or XA 2 in one of my pockets also, and have also been trying to keep my P&S Sony cam with me for video capabilities if needed.

I usually go out with 2 or 3 bags, depending on the distance I expect to hike and subjects I expect to find:

Bag 1 is for birding = a so-called racket bag for Tamron 300 f2.8, but in my case it's used for my Minolta 300 f4 apo + Min 1.4x apo tc + a700, the side pocket has just enough room for my Sigma 24 f2.5, the soft case of the 1.4x tc, spare battery and a blower brush

Bag 2 is for landscape/macro = a fairly small traditional SLR bag with either my Sony 11-18 or FD mount Vivitar 90 f2.8 macro manual focus, Minolta 24-85, macro extension rings, usually a 600si film body, Canon FD/FL mount 20mm f3.5 macrophoto lens with adapters, film rolls, lens cleaning spray, spare memory

Bag 3 is alternative to Bag 1 or extra kit for birding = a tamrac bag designed for Mamiya MF bodies, but in my case used to hold my Minolta 500 f8 AF reflex + a100 which fit perfectly, inside pocket has spare key of my truck (having locked myself out twice before...), side pocket has spare battery and memory

I have a black backpack type setup for covering body and gear. However, since I don't cover pro events, my favourite setup is to carry one body, one lens mounted and maybe a spare or perhaps a flash. All of this is carried in a small off the shoulder three years old Debenham's Mantaray bag. Just been around London with my rangefinder, small spare lens, shaving kit, films and contact lens solution in this bag. It is not pro and does not attract undue attention. I like it.
