75mm Framelines

Hello All,

I have recently been experimenting with my new 75mm Summicron-M 1.4.

This lens is quite spectacular, to say the least. My questions is

the following. On both my M7 and M6TTL the 75mm framelines that I

was working very closely with, don't seem to be very accurate in

either the slides or prints. I was very careful in my framing, and

it seems that the actual framing is somewhere in between the 50mm and

75mm lines. Can anyone verify this theory? Any help would be

greatly appreciated.

all best,

Jeffrey

All traditional lenses change focal length at various distances (slightly longer at the minimum distance setting), but the frame lines in the M cameras are fixed, and set for accurate framing at the closest distances. When you focus at longer distances, you will get more on film than the frame-lines show. There is a formula to visualize the change, but it is rare that you could work this out in a rapidly changing situation (where the M camera is suppose to excel). I will post it for you anyway just for the information.<div>004Vdw-11346684.jpg.e6cacd48ef88bbff9a36de2d071e6299.jpg</div>

My observation of the Leica framelines for all focal lengths is that they are educated guesses at best. My current M6 with 50mm Summicron is okay at distance but so far off when used at minimum focus I just bracket framing and crop when I print. If precise framing is absolutely necessary, I'll use an SLR.
