why would my film turn out grainy

some of the pictures on my last roll of film turned out really gainy what would

cause that it was at night and there wasn't much light so i had my shutter at like a

full second i have no idea why this would happen any pointers?

Do you mean the prints turned out grainy?

 

Did you use a standard consumer processing place like Walmart/Target/Walgreens/etc?

 

Minilabs will overexpose any print that they think has shadow detail that you "want" to see. They do this by default and you need to tell them not to when processing your order. Most will listen.

It would not be caused by shutter speed. Did you compensate for reciprocity? If not the film might be underexposed, which might cause it, especially if coupled with a little extra development. It could be many things, such as too much agitation, pushing, printing with more contrast, or it could be a grainy film or grainy developer. What film was it and have you used it at that speed, with that developer before?
