james_frater
I just got back today from my trusted Camera store in Sydney Australia. They already have a dummy camera on display and taking orders for the SONY A100/KM18-70mm KIT. I am told there have been 12 pre-oders already taken so far. But at $1700 Aussie dollars for this kit, the camera is not the bargin Price when you do a pure currency conversion on what Sony lists it for. Especially when this same kit costs under Sony website $999.00 USD = $1,329.37 AUD Looks like Import taxes gone wild a bit http://www.teds.com.au/www/6/1001102/displayproduct/1988876_1005803_.html Including $300 cashback just before Xmas, my 7D was cheaper. bill_thorlin
Would indicate duties etc. are about 30% more than in the US or perhaps your "trusted camera store" is not quite so trustworthy after all !? "Dummy camera" - perhaps the buyers are dummies as well :)
james_frater
I assume these cameras are coming from Asia, because trade agreements between Aus and US for example mean no taxes on imports. And I think many consumers are dummies. I never buy anything unless I can get a bargin.
james_frater
Actually a quick search of the Aussie sony sight reveal a big difference in price. So looks like the camera store was actually cheaper than Sony in Aus http://www.sony.com.au/dis/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=34306 DSLRA100B A100 DSLR CAMERA BODY BLACK $1,499.00 DSLRA100KB A100 DSLR SINGLE LENS KIT BLACK $1,749.00 DSLRA100WB A100 DSLR TWIN LENS KIT BLACK $1,999.
rokkor fan
All camera products in Australia have a huge mark-up applied by the distributor. That is why I buy from B&H in NYC.
