jamesdak
I recently broke down and bought a 7D. Now my widest prime, a 24mm f/2.8 is not wide enough for me. I have everything else covered with other lenses so I only want to consider another prime to cover the wide end. I've seen mainly good things about the Tokina 17mm f/3.5 ATX. I can pick this up for about 1/2 the price of a comparable new "digital" wide angle. Anyone have any experience with this lens. Most reviews seem positive. Thanks, Jim www.pbase.com/jhuddle
ivan_dzo
I've got one which I use on film. Centrally it's a very sharp lens indeed, but the corners are useless. On digital where only the central part of the image circle is used however, I suspect it will be an excellent lens. Good build quality.
jamesdak
I understand there are two version of this lens. The ATX Pro is supposed to be quite better optically. Is that the one you have?
melresnick
I had the ATX Pro on my 7D. Excellent lens. Sharp, compact, flare resistant, built like a tank and just as heavy.
shirish
I had the exact same need as yours. Got everything covered from 17mm on, but was looking for the one wide guy. Just invested in a Sigma 10-20mm after reading quite a few favorable reviews. I like what I got, cost me $500 after shipping from Adorama, but you want wide, 10mm (actuallylike 15 on the 7D) is plenty wide. I tried it on my M7 as well, and you get a circle at 10mm, but the view is something else. No regrets. Had to save up for a while, but well worth it. theaudiodoc
Jim, If you haven't already done so you may wish to check out user reviews here: http://dyxum.com/lenses/results.asp?IDLensType=1 IMO if I were you, considerding your extensive collection of film "7"s I would try to go for a lens that will be compatable with those, and not Digital APS sensors only. jamesdak
Agreed, which is why I'm looking so hard at the 17 ATX!
melresnick
Jim, here are a couple of reviews of the Tokina 17mm ATX-Pro that I found helpful: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/tokina_17_35/index.htm http://www.prime-junta.net/pont/Reviews/d_Tokina_AT-X_17mm/a_Tokina_AT-X_17_mm.html I've never read anything negative about this lens and I was very happy with mine. I had to replace it because it wasn't adequately sealed against a soaking in the Pacific Ocean. I decided to go with the Sigma 10-20 as a replacement because I don't use my film body any more and wanted both the wider and longer focal lengths. melresnick
That's interesting. I put both links into my post as regular text and the second one but not the first was converted to a (link).
