5600hs hot shoe repair

To my horror, I saw my Maxxum 7 with 5600hs get yanked out of my

wife's hands and go crashing into the floor. My son's foot got caught

in the strap.

The flash shoe on the flash broke into 3 pieces. The fall itself was

only about 1 to 2 feet but the flash must've hit first and the stress

was too much for the foot.

The foot looks like it's held on by 4 screws. Is it a part that I can

just order and replace myself? If so, where can I order the part? I

tried searching online but couldn't find anything. Will Minolta sell

me the part directly?

I know I can get it repaired by Minolta but just wanted to research

options prior to contacting them. Before I send it out to Minolta's

repair center in NJ, is this something I can have a local, reputable

camera store handle?

Are there any other "unseen" signs of damage I should consider? The

camera and lens were working fine.

Hi Thang and fellow Minolta-friends and photo.net friends,

Yeouch! Another example of why I always put the neck strap around my neck, or the person's neck who I'm handing the camera off to BEFORE putting the camera in my own or anyone else's hands!

I hope no one was hurt!

Thang- Now you know why the manufacturers use plastic. It's designed for just such a situation. By breaking, it reduces the chance you'll break some other more expensive part of the flash or camera. As you see it is held on 4 screws and is easily replaced. You might be able to do it yourself, or if not any repair center can do it without costing you an arm and a leg.

Well, the hot shoe repair was pretty painless. A hotshoe assembly kit cost almost $20 including shipping and NJ sales tax. Just had to remove 4 screws, plug the new shoe assembly in, and then put the screws back in.

I just have to go out tomorrow and shoot some pics to make sure nothing else is out of whack.

BTW, Minolta customer service said it would've been a flat $85 labor plus parts for the repair.
