EOS 20D review: IS zoom lens not so great

There is a review on the EOS20D at the german site "digitalkamera.de".

They did not like the IS-zoom (17-85, I guess) very much, because of

soft corners, heavy vignetting at wide angle and strong distortions.

They come to the conclusion that APS-sensor optimized lenses might

not be the perfect solution, and the use of full-frame lenses on APS-

sized sensors might have its benefits. Looks like the Minolta

approach with the full-frame zooms (necessary for the IS) is not that

stupid as it looked like in the beginning. Now if anybody could

design a 15-70 full frame zoom....

BTW, I don't have the budget for any of the above. Just wanted to

make you aware of the test.

If you don't have the budget, you probably won't have the budget for that 15-70 full-frame zoom. Just like i also don't have the budget. So they won't design it.

Why would you want a 15-70 by the way? It's so nice to have a few small primes instead...

Not an overly positive review.

Positives: marginaly better than the 10d - a little more resolution and less noise. Slightly

improved metering and auto focus.

Negative: Lots of moire problems (moire in lighter areas and in color vertical lines, blue

noise where there are light edges "blooming effect"). And a crappy zoom.

Fazit: If you already have 10d keep it and wait for the next one.
