User_4136860
They are expensive because they are rare because they were an optional extra not supplied with the lens and it's more than 25 years since they were manufactured, supply and demand.
steven_endo
If the BT-72 hood is substantially cheaper, perhaps buy one of those and cut it down?

mark_pierlot
The BW-72 fits the 17/4, 20/2.8 and 24/1.4 L. When I had the first two of those lenses, they each had a BW-72, and I sold them with their hoods. Perhaps the reason that they're in short supply is that sellers usually couple them with the lenses.
JDMvW
I have a similar (20mm, that is) lens from Nikon, and while I do have the proper Nikon-made lens hood (HN-14, 52mm screw-in) for it, it really doesn't do all that much in use. It's almost always better to use a piece of cardboard or one of those adjustable sun shade thingies to shade the front of the lens. I hardly ever use the hood, as a result.
I looked on eBay and elsewhere and found lots of BW-72 hoods, but they are, as you say, rather pricey. The BW-72s look very much like my Nikon hood, and I would guess share the same problem of shading so wide a lens.
This is too specialized an item, I think, to still have anyone making cheaper clones. New hoods for Canon EF lenses are also very pricey, but the clones make ersatz ones affordable.
I guess I'm saying that unless you've tried the actual hood and found it useful, I think you're probably as well off not worrying about the hood at all.

Been using the 17 & 20 more and more lately and as you know, the pronounced nose of those SWA and UWA lenses really stick out there. While recently going after the Milky Way in the dark I accidentally bumped one into something...it happened to have the large strong Canon hood on it and I suspect that hood prevented damage to the front of the lens...got me thinking about getting one for the other lens.
JDMvW
Ah, yes, the issue of protection does come up as well.
It's a long story that I don't like to recall, but a lens hood on my Canon EF 100-400mm lens probably did save me a lot of damage. Of course, that hood stuck out a good way in front of the glass however, unlike some of the ultra-wide hoods.. The incident did total the hood.
thomas_goehler
Check the generic hoods, e.g. at enjoyyourcamera.com. I found a generic replacement there which works absolutely fine on my FD 3,5/35-105
mark_stephan2
Have you checked for rubber lens hoods? Maybe you can find one at a very reasonable price. It'll probably offer the same protection and the oem hood. I use cheap 3rd party hoods with most of my EF lenses including a rubber hood with good results.
Bill C1664885404
Thanks, but the size and stiff rigidity / strength of the original Canon hood is what I had in mind

Bill C1664885404
Thanks...I've already got a metal screw-in hood for one of them. Was hoping to find another Canon style due to its physical size & strength...plus the way the Canon mounts vs. screwing into front threads...strikes me as being more robust in terms of protection but that's just an assumption on my part.

Bill C1664885404
As an update:

July 20th
Sent the seller an EBay message mentioning that sometimes the older hoods like that had so much wear / deterioration on the plastic nubs that the hood no longer detented firmly in place when rotated on...asked if he'd verify that the that the hood still detented firmly in place.

July 23rd
No Answer
Resent the same EBay message.

July 25th
Still no answer.
I won't be following up any further, but thanks again for letting me know about it.
