salman_ali
Hello,
I was interested in getting the Vivitar 85mm f/1.8 portrait lens for my D2x but wasn't sure if it was compatible. I'm a new convert to Nikon from Canon and not up on my mounts. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.
http://www.amazon.com/Vivitar-85mm-Portrait-Nikon-Cameras/dp/B00IC5EEKW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450935824&sr=8-1&keywords=vivitar+nikon+dslr+lens

rodeo_joe1
The company now trading as Vivitar isn't the same as the original Vivitar company that went into liquidation in 2008, and it's name transferred to Sakar International (Who? No I don't know them either).

Goodness knows who makes this lens that's sold under the Vivitar name, but you can bet it'll be nowhere near to the quality standard of the original Vivitar Series 1 lenses. At the price, I wouldn't expect much. I found a reported review of it here: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53903852

If you're in the market for a good-quality manual focus lens of 85mm focal length then a used 85mm f/2 Ai-s Nikkor would be a better bet. As would the excellent Samyang 85mm f/1.4. The Samyang has the advantage that it would be automatically recognised by the camera and offer body control of aperture.
ShunCheung
The D2X is compatible with pretty much all Nikon F mount lenses since the AI era (1977), with a few rare exceptions such as the two F3-AF lenses that are for the Nikon F3-AF only and a few APS-C lenses for Nikon Pronea APS film SLRs.

However, the 85mm lens to get in these days is the very affordable 85mm/f1.8 AF-S, which I reviewed for photo.net: http://www.photo.net/equipment/nikon/lenses/85mm-f1.8-g-af-s/review/
It costs a few times as much as the really cheap Vivita but you benefit from modern optics and auto focus. If that price is still too high, I would look into used Nikkor 85mm lenses from AF-D to manual focus.
