andres_mendez

Hello everyone, I would like to ask a question about my Mamiya's C330 waist level finder.
During a trip something happened to the waist level finder and now the frontal part swings back and forth, whereas before it would stay perfectly perpendicular to the ground glass. The same issue also causes that while the finder is closed the top part is easily opened, before it would stay closed until deliberately opened. This might seem a small problem but it is incredibly annoying when shooting because the magnifying glass adds more weight on the side and makes the swiveling more pronounced, this makes the focusing procedure difficult and cumbersome.

I have examined the finder but cannot find which part should be the responsible of keeping the lid closed tightly and perfectly upright when in use. Could you please advice me? maybe I have lost a part or springbut cannot exactly pin point which one. Thanks!
paul ron
there are springs on the inside. look closely with a bright light... black springs. The more you say, the less people listen.
kirk_strauchler
Also, there are 'wires' (for lack of a better word) that have a bend in them at the end. My guess is one or both of the wires got knocked out of position.
dave_s
The offending spring in my C330f, complete with corrosion and dog hair.

If you have trouble repairing yours, you might be able to find a replacement on the hated auction site, or (more likely) a junked camera you can use as a parts donor. IIRC, any of the C3, C33, and C330 finders should be backwards and forwards compatible.

paul ron
that heavy wire is a spring as well. see the ends? maybe it sliped off the cams? maybe broke or bent there? The more you say, the less people listen.
andres_mendez
Thank you all for your kind answers.
You are certainly right, the heavy wire seems to have snapped on both ends, and it no longer supports the lid. So now I only have the small 3 springs.
hmmm... this seems to be a weird thing to repair. Any suggestions on how to do it? Am i destined to buy a replacement finder?

dave_s
Parts cameras on ebay:
151936792714
201495252171

I don't see good waist-level finders, although one might turn up if you're patient.

There's also a couple of prism finders at good prices, although they are in rough shape. The prism finder and the porrofinder (porroflex finder) are both eye-level finders, but avoid the porrofinder.

In the meantime, see if you can hold it open by wedging in a thin piece of card or tape. Should be able to find a way.
John Seaman
I've never had any success with repairing these hoods once the springs have come adrift or broken.
kirk_strauchler
I'd be interested in knowing what caused it to break.
mag_miksch
if you buy a replacment look for the newer full enclosed design; with the half open older finders I often had the problem that in bright situations I just saw my mirrored face on the ground glass.
andres_mendez
Yes, I'm also curious to know why the ends snapped. As far as I remember the trip where it broke was uneventful.
Maybe I'll try to shape a similar wire by hand using a pair of plyers.
If I buy a replacement hood I'll follow your advice, I often have the same problem with my face reflected on the ground glass. Thank you all for your input.
