david cunningham
I'm going to be renting a Nikon D1x for a shoot I have in 3 weeks. I want to tether it to my laptop with a 13' Monster Cable firewire cable and need to know if I need a six to four pin or a six to six pin or a four to four pin cable. Thanks in advance. ray
I'm sorry I do not have a direct answer to your question, but I do have a concern about the data reliability on that cable. The max theoretical length of a cable using Firewire 400 is 4.5 m which is approx 14 feet. You're awefully, close to the theoretical limit of that length. You may want to contact Nikon to confirm that this will actually work reliably. As an interesting sidebar, the newly released Firewire 800 (www.apple.com/firewire), in addition to being twice as fast, also has a cable limit of 328 feet (100m) in burst mode. But off course, this doesn't help you one bit right now.
ellis_vener_photography
I'm pretty sure the camera side port is 4 pin. the other will depend on your computer. Ask the people you'll be renting the camera from for confirmation of this.
aardvarko
Camera side is actually 6-pin.
bjørn rørslett
The D1X will only accept a 6-pin Firewire on the camera side. The other end (4 or 6) is dictated by your laptop. I've used my D1x with a 5m cable, no problems encountered.
a_tonkin
May I ask if you're using MS Windows with your 5m cable? I can't get it to work on a used D1X, but have read countless tales of woe on the internet about Firewire cables being blocked as a 'bad thing' by Windows from XP SP2 onwards.
Still hopeful of finding anyone who actually runs this seemingly Mary Celeste-like website so I may change my registered email address
