Those CIS (Contact Image Sensor) scanners have a scanning head that runs the entire width of the platen, don't they? They don't have a lens either, which is why they're so cheap (and nasty).<p>Now, if you disable the LED illumination on one of those things, and place it in the image plane of a large format camera, haven't you got a ready-made scanning back?<p>You'd still have to modify the crappy mechanism to make it run vertical, but I suppose that's what Leaf and Phase-one charge for.;^) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You may end up with an image with weird color response. I'm not sure of the spectral response of the LED and light sensor array, but substituting daylight from a scene might be interesting. Better Light has a device for their scanning back that allows you to rotate the entire camera instead of moving the scan head.
