Ed_Ingold
I have a Manfrotto 2983 crossbar, which fits on 1/2" spuds on any medium duty light stand. The crossbar is collapsible to about 4", making it easy to carry. The sections telescope, and are locked in place by twisting the segments. I use muslin backgrounds, but this bar should support canvass as well. Canvass lies smoother, but is a lot harder to transport, however, because you should roll rather than fold it.

The 272B looks about the same, except it is anodized black, which costs more.
