55 Years Ago - January 1960

I like that Beseler ad, in which they threw in a Primo reflex. As it happens, in 1960 I got my first proper non box camera, a gift from a great aunt in anticipation of my trip to the Boy Scout Jamboree that year. It was a Sawyer's Mark IV, the Primo rebadged. It was, by the way, a very nice little camera, with a sharp F2.8 lens and a decently bright finder, and served me well for some years until it was stolen.

That definitely was the moment to scoop up some Nikkor LTM lenses that are still excellent to very good performers.

This is one of the best ever. Thank you! So much juicy goodness this time around...

The 'What's Ahead' column is definitely worth a read.

I believe what Canon claimed about that Canon 45-200. The only thing I won't believe is that it was cheap. TV and cinema lenses are never cheap.

Who didn't love that HS Ektachrome ad? Graphics were so much cooler back then. That would make a great poster. Anyway, 'high speed film' really is a relative term!

I bought a Canon P a few months back. Lovely camera, just not as buttery smooth as a Leica. But better value.

These old magazines - mainly from 1950 to 1970 - make you feel warm on the inside. Great stuff. I'm glad I have a few myself.

A LTM Nikon 50mm f/1.1 lens for only $157...

Matthew - If I had seen you at a Jamboree with that camera I would have been so jealous.

Mike - Glad you liked it.

Charles - Robert - Andrew - Gus - Whenever you guys build your time machine let me know. I have a few dollars saved up for some of those neat lenses.

JDM - I have started to put a note whenever I see an article by Keppler. You will see that starting in my January 1965 post.

Rick - I couldn't find any additional information on the Canon zoom lens even as a TV camera lens. I don't think Canon came out with a film camera zoom until around 1964.

Karim - It is all relative as far as film speed goes. I remember High Speed Ektachrome as a super, duper fast film for color but of course I was use to using Kodachrome. The time period from 1950-1970 was great. I enjoy seeing what the designers came up with whether the product was successful or not. There also seem to be a closer connection between the camera and the photographer.
