ihaddad
I couldn't find any discussion or comment regarding the suitability and stability of a Heavy Duty Samson tripod made by Quickset in IL for a heavy 4x5 (like a Cambo NX)or larger camera. If anyone currently uses one, please comment. I tried several tripods but found them unpractical as they shift slightly after I focus and while I am inserting the film carrier. I just purchased a HD Samson on E- bay and hope it will do the job better then the other ones I have.
mark_sampson
we have several at work. They are great tripods- sturdy, light for their carrying capability, and they will hold an 8x10 with ease. The drawback is that they're bulky, still quite big when collapsed. The baseplates on ours are large and were meant to hold an 8x10 flatbed camera, but our 4x5 monorail fits fine. eugene_singer
There was an article in View Camera last year (I don't remember the month) where the author had developed a special camera to photograph the space shuttle launchings from close-up distances. He chose the Quickset Samson tripod for use with this camera. It probably would make a very solid platform for a view camera, but most participants on this forum are searching for smaller, lighter weight tripods that can easily be carried in the field. That may be one reason that you haven't seen any discussion or comment on the Quickset.
