bruno_lessen
Hello,

I've found the old, entry-level Nikon F-401 owned by grandpa, but with no lenses.

I would like to know if actual lenses for (Nikon) full-frame DSLR would work with it.

Thank you so much for the support
lornesunley
It should work with all the Auto focus (AF, AF-D) and the AI and AIS manual focus lenses.

The G lenses (without an aperture ring) will not provide a way to change the aperture settings
mark_stephan2
It'll work with any Nikkor lens with an aperture ring.

Matthew Currie
As I understand it, the F401 (N4004 in USA) has no AI coupling, so you can mount an AI lens but it will not meter, the same as the low-end DSLR's now available. If this is so, I would assume that most pre-AI lenses will mount as well, even though one is cautioned not to try. Some pre-AI lenses are said not to be AI convertible owing to odd skirts, and these might not work, but a lens that can be converted to AI ought to fit.

G lenses will work on all meter settings, because aperture is changed with a dial on the camera.

On the F4, which has no such dial, G lenses work only on S and P modes.

Along with no AIS autofocusing, AF will also not work.
Matthew Currie
Too late to edit, what I meant above is that AV will also not work.
