Grafikon - Does anybody know what this is please?

<p>I found this whilst trawling the boot sales for vintage photography items - I have no clue what this is, but it looks interesting (and cheap) so I got it. The foam padding on the wooden box had already turned to sticky gunk so cleaned it up.<br /><br /> I am not sure if this is related to photography, and Google searches on whatever I can read off the equipment turned up nothing as well - except for the fact that the company who made it (Grafikon) had already gone bust ages ago.<br /><br /> The original power cord had a strange four-prong plug in it so I replaced it with the standard UK plug just so I can see how it lights up.<br /><br /> The torch (I'll call it that for the mean time) has some sort of an aperture at the handle that you can turn to control the intensity of the light. There is also a removable filter at the mid section of the torch.<br /><br /> I have also removed the top housing so the inner bits can be seen (please see the photos).<br /><br /> May I ask if any of you knows what this is please? <p>Microscope lighting? Just a guess, without knowing dimensions. The 90° prism and daylight film correction filter hint that way.</p>

<p>I posted this response last week but it hasn't shown up and has totally disappeared. Sorry if it comes up twice. <br />This machine is a Grafikon calibration tool for adjusting the colour balance of video monitors. It consists of a variable brightness light which corresponds to illuminant D65.<br />To balance the monitor you beed a test signal that has a white area (or close to white) and an area that is close to black. You then aim the probe at the white area (rubber bits touching the screen), look through the window and adjust the lamp (with the knob on the probe) to match the brightness of the white area of the test signal. If the hue of the white area is a little more red, blue or green than the lamp image you need to adjust the red, blue or green drive controls on the monitor (usually only pro/broadcast monitors have these controls). Next aim the probe at the dark grey area and repeat the procedure this time adjusting the R, G & B cut-offs.</p>
