Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L and Canon EF Extenders

Reading the great reviews for EF70-200 F/4L on this forum, I m

planning to get one. Just wanted to check if this lense is compatible

with Canon ED MC II extenders and whats the shortfall of using an

extender with it.

I am quoting one of my friends who said "advantage of having the 2.8

is that you are able to use the extender 1.4X or 2X if you need it in

the future. You can't really use it on the f4 version unless you

don't mind using manual focusing"

Does that mean that the extenders cannot be used for auto focussing?

thanks in advance

I've used a Canon Extender 1.4x on my EF 70-200 4L USM, yielding 98-280 5.6, and AF works great on my EOS A2 and Elan 7E. That is, there is no noticeable AF slowdown or inaccuracy. However, F 5.6 is too slow to fully enable the cross AF sensors in pro cameras (1V, 3), so AF performance is less dependable than the consumer cams (which only need F 5.6 to fully enable the cross sensor). However, the pro cams will AF at F8, albeit as a single axis sensor only, so the Extender 2.0x is usable with AF if you own an EOS 1V or 3.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

I have a 70-200 f2.8L and both EF2x & EF1.4xmk11 extenders.

The 1.4 is a great extender, I very rarely take it off the lens.

The 2x is ok, but not as sharp or contrasty and you wont be able to AF on your F4 lens.

With the L series lenses the EF1.4x or the EF2x are the pro extenders you should be buying.
