lex_jenkins
If you would prefer a compact camera with a non-telescoping lens that doesn't extend when the camera is powered on - like the Olympus XA through XA4 models (I still have an XA3) - take a look at the Olympus iHS TG-series "tough" cameras. The TG-630, 830 and 850 are all reasonably priced with very good auto-everything features and plenty of in-camera JPEG options for straightforward photos or enhanced results. There's no option for raw files but that may not be important to everyone, and the in-camera JPEGs are generally very good.

I took a friend shopping for her first digital camera last year and after trying everything available in three different stores she liked the Olympus iHS TG-620 or -630 best. It delivered great results more easily with less fiddling with controls and menus, compared with everything else she tried from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, Samsung, etc.

If you don't mind a telescoping lens that extends beyond the body when the camera is powered on, there are hundreds of choices. Just depends on your budget and what types of photography you enjoy.
andylynn
Fuji X100? The lens is equivalent to a 35mm f/2.8, the camera is small and it has as old-school a set of controls as you'll find.
custom film holders for fl
New cameras seem to be announced daily but I would look at a Sony RX100s right now if I was looking for a digital replacement to an XA.
andylynn
An RX100 is nothing like an XA. It's a small-sensor P&S with a zoom lens and a contemporary P&S-style interface.
custom film holders for fl
In terms of a small, unobtrusive, camera that produces quality images that often blow away much larger cameras, the RX100 II (sorry about the S before), the RX is very much like/in the spirit of the XAs I own.
