Footwear worn when shooting weddings?

What type of footwear does everyone wear when shooting weddings? I own a black-tie tux I wear to awards shows, and an assortment of dress shoes, but they're a bit hard on your feet. I was thinking of getting some of those gel-sole things I've seen advertised on TV (I'm not particularly fond of wearing black Nikes with a tux). I've also seen "comfort" dress shoes for women advertised on TV, but haven't seen any made for men.

I used to wear black Nikes (but not with a tux, just a dark slacks). For teaching, I have Cole-Hahn dress shoes with Nike Air soles. They're very comfortable for dress shoes, but they don't provide as much support as athletic shoes. I can comfortable stand and walk around classrooms for several hours a day, but they become uncomfortable when walking extended distances.

I wear these: http://us.magnumboots.com/viper-pro-5-0.html Purpose built for folks who are on their feet 8-12 hours at a clip. Your pants will cover them so they don't look like work boots, and the leather presents well. extremely stable and with a good insole, my feet do as good as they can. You should check out a store called Foot Solutions, they can usually get you started in the right direction.

Hey, thanks guys! The Cole-Haans seem like the ticket! Mike--what Nike shoe size do you wear? And, correspondingly, what size are your Cole-Haans? I was thinking of getting these Air Madison Plain Oxfords:

Whoops! Oddly, this particular Cole Haan style is very poorly reviewed at Zappos, e.g., "These are some of the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever worn. There is no arch support. The heel is too high forcing the foot forward with little support in the front." Other styles of Cole Haans seem to fare better.

ralph, arch support would only matter to you if you would have mid-to-high arches. Do note that return shipping is money- & hassle-free with Zappos. Yes, the other point of heel pushing the foot forward would be of concern.

Mike, do you classify yourself as one with narrow feet? IOW, do most of Nike shoe models fit comfortably in forefoot?

Peter, do the Magnum shoes get hot & sweaty?

I wear Keens, These also take a shine well.

Uber comfortable, and great support. The grip is something I must have for how I shoot (though obviously not as important for many of us). The only shoes I've ever had that don't feel like I'm pulling off a leaden sack at the end of a shooting day. I prefer wearing their Glisans (when I need a toe and heel) and Newports on a day to day basis, but obviously those aren't OK to shoot events in.

I have had uncomfortable shoes in the past, and the Gel insoles do make a huge improvement (ie. they make a terrible pair of shoes reasonably tolerable), but they don't completely make up for a poorly designed (for your foot) shoe.

Feet are different. As are the rest of the body. What's comfortable for one person will be horrible for the next.

I suggest visiting a place who makes custom orthotics. They can examine you and determine what you kind of support you need and what type of shoes that would fit you. They will make a custom insole for you if that's what you need. It's not cheap but well worth the money.

Nothing you can buy off the shelf will be even close to something that is custom just for you.

I would agree that nothing beats custom…. but some of these come pretty close:
And many are made for custom orthotics. I have a pair of Drew Walkers I use for weddings and oh what a difference it makes. For what it's worth, I use to use Rockports. No comparison. Another tip I was given some time back: compression socks. For most of a wedding we are on our feet. This means that our feet will swell every so slightly (more for some). This adds to the discomfort. Compression socks will control the swelling.

I wear pink Chucks. It's a signature for me, and I always ask the couple if they prefer I wear formal shoes. Not one has asked me to wear anything else. They like my Chucks and it makes people smile and sometimes it's a good ice breaker. I stay comfortable and mobile all day. :-)
