Hello Nikon folks. Hope everyone in the US had a pleasantly long Labor Day weekend. I have to hand it to the organizers that keep one of our local summertime farmer's markets perking along - they know how to book some interesting guests that help make all of that fresh local produce compelling. Chef de Cuisine Matt Baker of Washington DC's historic Occidental Grill was present on Sunday to demonstrate a (very tasty!) shaved carrot salad. Shoot anything freshly made? Share!

00bxup-542299784.jpg.61ed1671efbe178da941940a7690ae85.jpg

Impossibly dim lighting isn't the Nikon V1's strongest point, and I didn't get it to substitute for a dSLR -mostly I use it as a P&S on steroids. But I gave it a try with my 50/1.8D AF Nikkor via Fotodiox adapter (manual everything only) this weekend at Hip Pocket Theatre, an outdoor theater where pre-show audiences and performances usually run from around 8 pm to midnight. Results were good enough that I might plonk down some coin for the 18.5/1.8 "normal" lens, even though it lacks VR (which I really need - at least half of my snaps that evening were marred by my own camera shake).

The V1's still frames during video are only a little convenient - you can pull out the same quality frames during video editing - but I still shoot a few stills while recording anyway. Despite the blur and high ISO flaws, this one appealed to me. The blur and in-camera noise reduction created a painterly effect that seemed reminiscent of the John Singer Sargent paintings I saw last year at a local museum.

The play that night was the closing performance of "The Tempest". When I saw this little fellow, illuminated only by his tablet and the dim lighting of the snack bar, I thought of Prospero's magic books.

*Nikon V1, 50/1.8D AF Nikkor (via Fotodiox adapter), ISO 1600, 1/100th @ f/1.8. (Minimal adjustments in Nikon ViewNX2, which I don't like as well as Lightroom 4.4.)

Happy wednesday!

Martin, I really like your take on the vintage instruments.
Lex, the V1 is a neat tool for discrete shooting, I especially enjoyed looking at the last shot of your series.
