eskil_hess
Hi everyone.

Just one quick question, does anyone own a flower hood(like the 70-200 2.8 hood) on their 4.0?

Have anyone actually tried the JJC lens hoods?

I see they sell this one, which looks like the 2.8 hood.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-Tulip-Flower-Lens-Hood-Shade-for-Canon-70-200mm-f-4L-USM-IS-USM-JJC-ET-74-/380617539002?pt=UK_Photography_CameraLenses_Lens_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET&hash=item589e92bdba
wolf_weber
Originally I got one similar... Don't see the point though. After all, on a 1.6 crop factor body the lens corresponds closer to a 100-300mm Zoom. No flower hood necessary. To protect lens and filter I prefer a classic hard rubber telescopic model from HOYA.
bobatkins
It's a piece of plastic. Not sure how it couldn't work. Not exactly high technology.

Petal style hoods are never necessary, they are just more efficient (assuming proper dimensions)
eskil_hess
That is not true.. If the Quality is bad, then it probably will fit bad.. It probably will be wobly. If the inside material is bad, then it can reflect light. If the "holes" are too big, then it will be sunflare

mark_pierlot
I have JJC hoods for a couple of my other lenses, and they're fine. But I use the non-petaled OEM hood on my 70-200/4 L IS.

paddler4
Petaled hoods are used to avoid vignetting in the corners. Without the petal shape, the hood would have to be short enough in all directions to accommodate the shortest focal length. This is completely unnecessary with a 70-200 f/4--it will take a nice long standard hood, almost 8 cm long. Using a petaled hood that is shorter than that at its shortest point will simply protect less against flare.

JDMvW

will actually create more flare than the original ET-74?

Not really, the inside that counts is as black as the original. I got a "white" one for my 100-400mm and it works just fine and makes the whole rig look even more like an RPG launcher, if that's what you're after.

Marcus Ian
If you are shooting in a warzone than that is a valid concern. I saw an apache video from Iraq in which the pilot literally mistook a pair of AP photogs for insurgents carrying RPGs They looked like they were 'shooting' w/ 70-200/2.8s w/ hoods on to me (though the video was a bit grainy - and from an apache). The AP photogs did not survive the interaction with 30mm anti-tank rounds. It would be humorous if it wasn't real.

White and black stripes aren't a common RPG paint scheme. L love was readily apparent to me.
