Unresponsive WFT Pairing software for Canon 6D

Recommended Posts

In early January I bought a Canon 6D. While setting it up, i also successfully paired it through its wifi facility to my PC operating XP SP3. The pairing software operated without any hitches. Today when I reverte to attempting to download through wifi, the pc's EOS Utility's WFT pairing software screen remained blank, not recognizing the camera. The camera was switched to wifi enabled, and had recognized my wireless router.
I uninstalled and re-installed the EOS Utility software from the disc. No difference.
If anyone has any suggestions what may be causing this hiccup, I would be delighted to hear from you.

I have both disabled the wi-fi at the camera end and re-enabled it. It always seems to find my router without any problem after I have loaded its wireless network name and wireless key. I have also re-set the router itself - still no joy...Canon technical support are open on Monday. so I will try them next, although I am not that confident as they told someone else that the 6D Wi-Fi won't work with Windows XP. That is rubbish, as I had it working already!

Problems with WiFi connectivity date back to the WFT-E4, so I'm not surprised that the 6D has issues too.

As far as I know it does (or at least it can) work with XP, though whether Canon specifically designed it to or whether they went with Windows 7/8 I don't know. They don't seem to specify anywhere exactly what compatibility is guaranteed, though they'd be idiots not to support XP at this point since it still has around 35% of the Windows market.

You might be able to tell their official policy by seeing what software is available for download from their website for the 6D with your OS specified as Windows XP rather than Windows 7. Any difference in what's available should reflect what Canon officially support.

What's supported and what works can be different. I believe that Windows 95 supported USB ports, though as I recall actually getting then to work on any consistent basis was a struggle. I seem to recall giving up on it myself.

It's always possible the rat's nest of services etc. that Windows uses is causing a problem. Just because it works one day doesn't mean it will always work the next, especially if Windows has updated itself or some other program is requesting some Windows service that interferes.

I've heard that disabling Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service can sometimes help (I've no idea why), but that's 3rd hand info since I don't connect by WiFi myself.

Good luck with help from Canon!

Bob, Thanks for your feedback. Strangely enough the Windows Music Player is playing up (or not playing, more accurately) so there could be something in that suggestion. I may just uninstall it and see where that takes us.

Despite a couple of exchanges by phone and e-mail with Canon Technical Support, we are no further forward. I uninstalled ALL Canon software on my p.c. shut the p.c. down, and reinstalled the software which came with the 6D, from the disc.
I reset all settings on the 6D - Still the same problem. I also disconnected and restarted the router...there's not a lot else left, unless you can come up with a successful fix which I haven't yet thried or thought of. Any further suggestions would be most welcome, short of sending it back to Canon!

An update: a solution to the problem, has been supplied by the technical people at www.camerainthepost.com, who had supplied the 6D to me in the first instance. They responded to my pleas for help with the following advice:
QUOTE
we think the problem may be caused by the network setting in Windows XP. It is possible that your computer's firewall setting/sharing setting has blocked the network discovery function which make the PC failed to discover the camera, though the camera is connected to the same network.
We'd commend you to check your PC's network setting and make sure UPnP - also called network discovery function is turned on so it can recognize other devices in the same network like the camera.
To find how to enable UPnP function, please refer to: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001367.htm#2.
UNQUOTE
The UPnP function had not been activated, or had been deactivated, so that was sorted, and I discovered that AVG PC TuneUp software in Turbo mode had turned off synchronisation with mobile devices and limited support for cameras and scanners. Unchecking those limitations, and we were back in business with p.c. recognizing camera by wifi.
I hope this may help others struggling with a less than totally helpful Canon help desk.
Incidentally, I commend camerainthepost.com to anyone contemplating buying camera equipment - they provide superb service out of Hong Kong. Equipment worth almost $5,000 ordered on a Sunday evening, was with me by lunchtime on Wednesday in northern Scotland, at a considerable saving compared to local UK prices.

How to connect Canon 6d to PC through WIFI!
Works fine with Windows XP3
Solution for Windows 7: Right click on EOS utility - Properties - Compatibility - RUN AS WINDOWS XP3

Problem solved, EOS utility will recognise the camera and you can download images through WIFI.
Took me 2 days to figure that out.

"Unresponsive WFT Pairing software for canon 6D" - it is not unresponsive. You just need to buy a WFT (wireless file transmitter) for your camera to use that. Usually costs $600-1000. Am I the only one who read the manual?
Hope that helped,

John Smith,
I am not sure which version of the 6D you possess, but mine came with WiFi built-in to it.
It has been working properly ever since Camerainthepost supplied the solution in February.

I understand they do or did make a 6D version without WiFi, for places like North Korea, maybe,
which is presumably why you are referring to the "need to buy a WFT".
You don't, provided you have the regular 6D with in-built WiFi.

Still having issues, tried the above suggestion, been on the Canon website.

I have no problem with the 6D working with the Android App.

But on my Windows 8 system, I got it to work through my router one time. Had an issue getting it to communicate through the firewall and the program said it would make a fix, once it did it connected but so slow. After I was done my 50 Mbs sec high speed Internet dropped to about 50kbs, not only for me but for every device on my wireless network including my wife's MAC Book Pro. I recall dialup modem speeds from years ago and that is how bad it was.

After a day of trying to figure out what happened, going over the router setting and thinking it must have gone bad or my cable modem went bad, we noticed every time I shut off my computer the Internet speeds went back up for all other devices.

I am pretty good with networks, it used to be part of my job. I realized something running on my computer was killing the network.

I started Task manager and disabled the Canon WFP utility (WiFi Pairing Utility) from running and disabled it from startup and my speeds came back along with everyone else on the network when I was on.

I have tried searching the internet for more info on this issue. I saw one reference with no solution. At least one other person reported poor computer speeds.

I chalked it up to POS software from Canon.

Tonight I played around trying to get the PC to connect directly with the Canon, not through the router. I set the Canon 6D up as an AD HOC connection per instruction I found on the Canun USA forum.

The manual states that you should only have to go through the setup one time but my computer will not re-connect unless I clear the connection and set it up each time.

select exit and ok
select info (general sett)
select clear wi-fi settings and ok

select wi-fi function
ok for new nickname
enter 6D ok
ok
pick computer icon
select find network then ok
select enter connection
select ad hoc ok
6D for ssid ok
auto for channel
none for encryption

computer
make sure other networks are disconnected
when 6D network shows up lower right corner select connect

camera
auto for ip address and ok
wait 1-2 minutes
when start paring device appears no camera select ok
wait 1-2 minutes

computer
when paring message shows up

open the eos utility from lower right menu
select paring over wi-fi/lan (eos paring software will open.
select camera and the connect

camera
when computer is found select ok
then ok for setting name
press menu twice to clear screen.

computer

use eos utility or exit eos and start apt

I can get my wireless to connect to the Canon, I enabled the Canon WFP utility, but can not get it to see the canon 6d and pair.

The Android Phone and iPhone don't have and issues. This is a Canon software for Windows issue, the software is lacking any setting or reset functionality in the windows App., it is like run the App and hope it works, but no ability to get into it and diagnose.

I did try the run as a legacy Win XP (SP3) program. Didn't help. Perhaps I could try uninstall and reinstall. Who knows what was written into the windows registry that got tweaked. Or what is going on with the WiFi Pairing software that could bog down every device on a Belkin Wireless Router. Restore Windows to an earlier date isn't an option at this point, to many pieces of expensive software have been installed and I don't want to go through the PIA of reinstalling and dealing with reinstalling software and re-registering Key Codes for software from several companies and calling the to explain why I need to reactivate the software.

I realize this is an old thread, but perhaps someone will read this that has gone through this and have a solution.

Cheers, Mark
