dustinbise
My 24-105 f4 is L has devolped zoom creep after two weeks of light shooting. As a nikon convert to the 6d, I must say I am a little sad to have to send it in already. Has anyone had success in Canon fixing zoom creep on this lens? I love the new gear and have re subscribed to photo net. I look forward to spending time here and meeting fellow photographers and sharing ideas. Just looking to ease my mind a bit while I wait for my camera back (I sent in the body as well, for a general inspection, just in case). I guess I will be shooting with my d70 for a few more weeks.

I am also planning to get the photo.net insurance. Any experiences you care to share with the service? I was unable to get coverage via my homeowners policy.
bobatkins
Had mine for 3-4 years. No creep.
sarah_fox
My 24-105's zoom ring has been firm since 2005 and shows no signs of loosening. Surely it's a manufacturing defect. I imagine once the problem's fixed, you'll be good from here out.
JosvanEekelen
Mine is 6 years old and no sign of zoom creep. Have it repaired or put a rubber band around it. Since it is new I'd have it fixed.
jamie_robertson2
Mine developed zoom creep after 6-7 years. Coincidentally, it also broke completely around the same time. One big repair bill later and it's like new again.
wayne_woodruff
I use a rubber band, preferably a color not normally found on a lens, like green. I tell everyone it's a new line of L+ lenses. Should they ask the difference, I show them.
Marcus Ian
LOL, green means is a DO lens ;-) - 24-105/4 L DO IS USM!

...or a black rubber band (or one of the silicon 'cause' wrist bands) works quite well.
David_Cavan
Ours is 5+ years and no problem. However its really frustrating when your lens is the only one that's doing it.
Dave Cavan https://davecavanphotographics.com/
JDMvW
Another 5+ user of the 24-105. No creep so far. [X fingers crossed]
jon_austin3
I bought my 24-105 new 7+ years ago. I don't recall when it began to exhibit zoom creep, but it's been a few years now. This is my most-used lens, and the only zoom I own that changes length when zooming. Yeah, it's irritating.

I found a how-to online for adjusting the screws under the focus ring, but it didn't make any difference. So I have resorted to the rubber band solution (place a rubber band around the lens barrel, slightly overlapping the zoom ring).

I'd send it off to Canon for repair, if I wasn't using it all the time. I should have bought the 5DIII + 24-105 kit, instead of the body only, and sold the older lens.
PuppyDigs
I also have a 24-105 4L kit lens I bought with a 5D in 2005. I've used the lens a lot, took it all over the world and it still works great with no creep whatsoever. Like others have suggested, the OP's lens may be defective.

I've owned a few lenses with zoom creep: Nikkor 80-200 F4 AI, EF 75-300 IS USM and, the worse of the worse, EF 28-135 IS USM. The 28-135 was loose as a goose and zoom just by looking at it!
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
g dan mitchell
From what I can tell, zoom creep affects a lot of 24-105 lenses. I love my 24-105, and it is a fine performer, but it most certainly did develop the proverbial "creep" after a few years of extensive use. (A few weeks is way too soon, and I'd send it in if I were you.)

I also tried some of the online supposed adjustment tricks and they did not work at all. In my view, this lens should eventually be redesigned to either have a tension ring (like the 100-400) or a locking switch (like the new 24-70).
savagesax
I've had mine since 2003 or so. Lots of images have been taken doing about 40 weddings a year. Not a single problem. Just a question - why switch from a Nikon to a Canon? If you had a mess of Nikon lenses did you take a hit?
JDMvW
Since this was live a few weeks ago, I ran across a company that will sell you a special rubber band for $5 - made for various lenses and there is one for the 24-105. They are called Lens Band™ and sell on eBay, and perhaps at a store near you if you're lucky

http://www.ebay.com/sch/lensband/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

I have no idea how well these work as compared to a big rubber band from the office supply place.
poulbh
I had a slight creep on my 24-105, so I moved the original rubber ring up and put two rubberbands below it in the groove, to keep it in place and it works.
I did however order the Lensband from the link but didn't receive it yet.

poulbh
It worked ok untill I pulled the camera up and down the bag, then the white rubberbands rolled off. I have now installed the Lensband slightly ovverlapping the stationary part and it adds nice friction.
ari_lee
I think the best solution I've found online belongs to Lens Band. This simple and cheap fix also looks extremely nice on my Canon 70d and 24-105mm. I got this from Amazon and it arrived in 2 days with their free shipping: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050KHY5E/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0050KHY5E&linkCode=as2&tag=zippeeshade-20
