fredonian
Greetings, Just seeing if anyone might know the types of engineers who are (or were) involved in the preliminary development of dedicated film scanners? I'm sure there are many types involved but I'm primarily interested in those involved in the technical function and not the visual design and appearance or gearing it for mass production. Thanks for your time and regards, Charles
MichaelChang
Product development cycle on the technical side usually begins with a list of detailed specifications and features.

Broadly speaking, and depending on the complexity of the product, it can be "designed" by one person in block diagram form at a conceptual level, but making the thing work as a prototype may involve primarily mechanical engineers and electronics engineers with interdisciplinary skill sets since the optical and software side is (relatively) known art.

pete_s.
Well you need optical engineering for the optics, mechanical engineering for film transport and the enclosure, electrical engineering for all the electronics and software engineering for the microcontrollers and their firmware in the scanner.

The mechanical and electrical engineers require different specialists as well. For instance the electrical engineers working on the CCD imager are not likely to be the same as those working on the microcontroller design.

BrianS1664879711
... and don't forget the systems engineers (as Michael Chang alluded to) and the industrial design engineers and the packaging engineers and the marketing engineers. In short... it takes a village of engineers.
...

MichaelChang
The "types of engineers" are perhaps less important than the competence of the collective team members.

I've had the privilege of working with and mentored by some of the most competent designers/engineers who are equally comfortable in a machine shop turning out complex mechanical parts as they are analyzing semiconductor circuits at the wafer level. These guys are hard to come by but they do exist.
