N6006 replacement

I have a 6 year old N6006 that is on its last legs. Although it

still functions, I'm looking for a replacement SLR to complement my

M6 TTL. As I'm not all that familiar with Nikon's current line-up I

was considering an N80, but wanted to get some suggestions. An F100

seems a bit much for my needs - some travel, mostly family shots.

If you use any AI-S manual-focus lenses, you will need to get the N100/F100 as the N80 does not meter at all with them.

 

Or if you want a solid all-mechanical body like your M6, get a FM3A...

Depends on what kind of lens you want to use.

 

AF D&G ---> N80

 

AI, AIS ---> Fm3a (FM3a could not use AFG lens. Can use standard TTL flash mode only.)

 

AF, AI, AIS ---> Get a used N90x or N70 (N70 can't use G type lens)

I have the same exact problem - a replacement for an N-6006 and I have been wavering for about a year, between the N-80 and F-100. The N-80 seems to have everything one needs, but I am leaning towards the F-100. Reasons - AIS lenses can be used with the F-100,

some of the long AF zooms will balance better with the F-100, and I've read here that the AF is a little surer on the F-100. Still, I'm torn between spending all that money and getting an N-80 and some lenses.

If and when I ever opt for autofocus, I'll choose the F100 - for a host of reasons, not least of them autofocus speed and use with manual focus lenses.

One more issue to consider comparing the N80 and F100: the F100 has a high eye point view finder (necessary if you wear glasses) and the F100 can use AA batteries.

These were two main reasons to buy the F100 instead of the N80.
