Mike Butkus' site Orphan Cameras has a (free, but he would appreciate a donation) manual for the Contax 111a which may help you.</p>

<p>Made easier by having the transport/shutter wound, you move the "index dot" knurled grip ring. Either with your fingernail or two thumbs, spin it through<strong> friction</strong> to your desired setting. The self-timer should start up as soon as you press the "charged" shutter release button. (The earlier Contax II and III require sliding of the button hidden under the self-timer lever)</p>

<p>Gus is quite right. They can get a bit stiff though, so don't break a nail!</p>

<p>I will second <strong>Tony's</strong> comment. If it's anything like my Contax IIa, the knurled grip ring is quite likely to damage your fingernail. Gorgeous camera, but be careful when resetting the frame counter!<br>
