Just got a Yashica

<p>So, over the weekend I had a bit of an impulse buy, and got a Yashica-Mat EM from Central Camera while visiting Chicago. Went in to see what used F-mount lenses they had, walked out with my first Medium format camera....</p>

<p>I have run one roll of Ektachrome 100G through it (hoping that my metering was correct) and now have a few questions.</p>

<p>First, what's the quality of the scans you get from Dwayne's when you send them a roll of 120? I don't have a film scanner (yet), so I would like something that can easily make 12" x 12" prints at 300 dpi. Although, if I have to wait until I buy a scanner (Epson V600 probably), that is fine. I do have a light table and loupe to view the slides.</p>

<p>Second, any tips for shooting a TLR? I am finding the waist level finder to be great, but the flipped left and right axis are a little disorienting.</p>

<p>Don't forget about the parrallax issue, doesn't become a factor until you get close, have never shot a yashica so don't know what the min. focus distance is, but if it does focus close when doing so compose with a little extra space at the top of the frame so you don't cut off heads and such. I use a polarizer some on my mamiya tlr and used to screw the polarizer into the viewing lens to set it , but actually forgot to put it on the taking lens to shoot so now I just hold it to my eye to set it then put it on the taking lens, painting little dots or numbers on the filter ring helps so you can set it to the desired polarization.</p>

<p>The idea on the polarizer and numbers is really good. See, this kind of life experience is why I like photo.net.</p>

<p>I have been pushed into recognizing that my new Canoscan 9000F is actually pretty good at scanning and it will do medium and even large format film.<br>

Its list price is only US$200, and it sells for less on-line (e.g., $150 from Amazon). That makes DIY scanning attractive in terms of cost-effectiveness, not to mention the ability to do it quickly, especially if you branch out into MF developing.<br>

I've been tempted by some of the Yashica TLRs; but, for now, I'll stick to my <a href="../classic-cameras-forum/00Py76">Weltaflex</a>. ;)</p>

<p>My first serious camera was a Yashica 635 TLR; now a Mamiya C330 TLR is my main MF camera. The right-to-left reversal in the viewfinder is tricky at first, but you get used to it more quickly than you'd think. As for parallax, it's like Robert Buck said, it really doesn't matter until you get right down to minimum focus, about 1 meter; also the viewing screen on the Yashicas is masked down on all four sides (the negative area is a bit larger than what you see on the viewing screen). I use the focusing magnifier consistently, so I'm usually shooting from eye level. It's only when I specifically want the lower angle that I move the camera down to waist -- actually chest -- level after focusing. The YashicaMats were Yashica's top-of-the-line model. They're great cameras.</p>

<p>Always use the lens hood. Consider using a remote cord even when hand holding to minimise camera shake.<br>

Check the lens carefully, Yashicamats have a habit of spraying the front surface of the rear element with oil.<br>

Wind on as gently as possible, their winding mechanism is a weak point.<br>

Try using the sports finder for moving subjects.<br>

You can use the camera in different positions, for example on its side at arms length, above your head even, for shots you might not be able to get from the conventional chest / waist level.<br>

Its good practice to rack it in to infinity focus between shots and when transporting it, to minimise the risk of knocking the lens board out of true from accidental impacts. Good luck.</p>

<p>I have a Yashica Mat EM too; within its limits, it can take very good pictures (f/8, f/11, and f/16 are your best bets).</p>

<p>Dwayne's says the scans they offer with processing (for $2.99 / roll) are 4.5 MB. That would correspond to 306 ppi at 4x4 inches or 245 ppi at 5x5 inches--nowhere near your stated goal. At times, some labs have offered high-resolution minilab scans made at the time of processing for <em>relatively</em> modest <em>additional</em> charges, but I don't see an option on the Dwayne's order form. Also, even in the best of cases (e.g., A&I-provided 2300 ppi / semi-nominally 70 MB each), they are still minilab scans, and whatever their pixel count, they are not as good as scans from a dedicated film scanner.</p>

<p>Well-made <em>flatbed</em> scans of 6x6 (cm, nominal) film ought to be able to produce a good print of 12x12 inches. Most people think various different flatbeds have true, effective resolutions between 1200 ppi and 2400 ppi. My Yashica gives me about 55x55mm, so scans effectively 1200 ppi would give you 300 ppi prints of about 8x8 inches, and if the flatbed scans are effectively 2400 ppi, then you'd be up to about 17x17 inches. I have an Epson Perfection 3200 Photo, and I think typical performance is somewhere around an effective 1600 ppi, which would give you about 12x12 inches.</p>

<p>On the other hand, I've had film from the Yashica drum-scanned at 3800 ppi, and although that is probably overkill, the results can yield quite acceptable 36x36-inch prints, or very nice 24x24-inch prints.</p>

<p>I'll probably order a flatbed next week. Don't have the cash to drop on the v700, so either the v600 or 9000F.</p>

<p>At the point that I have any frame that is good enough to warrant me printing larger than 12 x 12 (largest my printer can handle), I'll go with a drum scan somewhere.</p>

<p>The winder gives me a few fits. If that is their weak points, than hopefully it will last at least a couple of years. After that, if I want to keep shooting MF film, I'll just get a new (old) camera.<br /><br />Don't have a hood or filters for it yet. Going to have to look to see what I should get. Bayonet 1, correct?</p>

<p>I know medium format film scanners are horrendously expensive. But I think scanning MF on a flatbed scanner defeats the purpose of shooting MF. If you can only get a print of 8x8 or even 17x17, what's the point? You can do that with 35m. If you want good scans from MF and can't afford a MF film scanner, I think you need to find a good pro lab that will do high-res scans. If you're working in B&W, the simplest solution is to just develop and print yourself.</p>

<p>I will send out negatives for drum scanning, if needed. 12 x 12 is my biggest print size, so it would be the biggest for me casually.</p>

<p>The biggest reason I got the camera is for the experience of shooting something else. So far, well worth the experience.</p>

<p>The point is to use the flatbed for proofs, small prints, and web display, and then send the best frames out for professional scanning--or, especially with B&W, print them in a wet darkroom. For someone who wanted / needed a low volume of high-quality large prints with a modest investment in equipment, for years this actually was a fairly sensible approach. The current group of moderately-priced 16+ MP DSLR's, at least if paired with good lenses, has (IMO) greatly reduced (but not eliminated) the value of this approach. And while my 16 MP DSLR covers the large majority of my pictures today, just this morning I put some MF film in the mail to Dwayne's.</p>

How much did you send? I'm thinking I'll mail the first roll tomorrow, but it seems like such a waste to mail only one roll. But I really need to see if it turned out to make sure the camera is working as promised.</p>

<p>I have been using a Yashicamat professionally since the late 1960s. These days I scan the film on an Epson Stylus Photo R2880. I had some 11x14 prints made recently and the gal who made the prints from my scans said I could blow them up four times larger if I wanted.<br>

I used a Rollieflex in the 1950s and early 1960s and scans from those negatives are even better -- more dynamic range -- that the Yashicamat. But the Yashicamat negs are wonderful.</p>

<p>Zach, I have been working with a V500 on 120 film. I like a sharp print, and I'm happy with prints at 6x the linear dimension of the film. For your setup, provided you don't crop too much, you should be able to make good 12x12" prints from your Yashicamat.</p>

<p>Zach, you can get excellent resolution in machine scans these days.</p>

<p>I like the high-resolution scans from North Coast Photographic Services in San Diego or from Precision in Austin TX. They will develop and scan with plenty of pixels for a very reasonable price. The two are equivalent for scans, use the same equipment. NCPS will develop your B&W and E6; both develop C41. (The key limitation of the scans is jpeg only.)</p>

I have an R2880, but don't remember seeing a film scanner anywhere on it, or in the manual. Did I miss something?</p>

<p>I think that the Canoscan 9000F really does come to over 4000 ppi effective scanning for 4x5, MF, and 35mm. I have an older Canoscan 9950F and it is good up to fairly high resolution too, but not so good as the newer one.<br>

I'm sure drum scanning is better, but I don't think that it is really <em>necessary</em>.</p>

<p>The Canoscan scanners I have (three: a real film scanner 4000, and the two flatbeds 9950, 9000) all work well with VueScan as well as the proprietary software, where that still works under OSX Lion.</p>

<p>I run Windows 7, and soonish, Windows 8, so not too worried about Mac compatibility. That said, that 9000F is really appealing.</p>

<p>I mailed out the first roll, total for the film, development, and mailing comes out to about $24 a roll. So, $2 a frame, not too bad really. Of course, that cost will reduce if I mail out multiple rolls and buy film for cheaper (Ektachrome 100 by the roll is not cheap).</p>

<p>If you haven't bought your scanner Zach, I'd wait. It would probably be in your best interest to pay a few bucks here and there to have your film scanned for you, and buy the V700 when you can afford it. I have one of those guys, and it's great. I also have access to a few Imacon scanners, and I can tell you with complete honesty that if you're shooting black and white, or running Silverfast Ai, the differences between them are not very large at all. The Imacons hold the film flatter, and (if properly maintained)are relatively dust-free, while the V700 picks up dust like crazy.</p>

<p>Now if you're shooting colour, or your exposure is a little off, the ability to make a raw scan is huge. Then again, so is the price. Either way, I can assure you that the resolution of the V700 is such that any problems you have making large prints will be due to the camera's lens and the resolution of the film, and not how many numbers the scanner spits out.</p>

<p>Most of the people I know use a V700, and send out for a drum scan if they need something REALLY big. Adam Bartos (google it) has a multimillion dollar studio in NYC, has several critically acclaimed photo books and exhibitions, and he and his wife are donors to MOMA. They're not on the list - they're on the <em>plaque</em>. So suffice to say, he could probably buy whatever the heck he wants.<br /><br /><br>

He does his in-house scanning with a V700 :)</p>

<p>Long rant aside, the Yashis are great cameras. I shot one of my favourite images, and easily my favourite colour image, with a Yashi. It's linked at the bottom. It's also much more enjoyable to use than my Hasselblad, lighter, and slightly smaller. The lens has a great look to it. The only downside is that it's not nearly as high-resolution as Zeiss glass, so it's not the best choice for huge, clinically sharp prints. Large prints have a slight softness to them, even at f/8. But if you're not a crazy sharpness guy, then that isn't a problem.</p>

<p>You asked for tips? I really only have one: when using a waist-level finder, you may find that your eyes don't focus on the screen properly, and you get a slight back focus. I have that problem, presumably because of my heavy prescription glasses. If you're focusing closer than 15 feet or so, it would probably be helpful to focus to where you think is correct, and then pull the focus slightly forward. Sometimes I forget to do this, and I get a lot of sharp ears and fuzzy eyes.</p>

<p>Also, if you're shooting landscapes or city scenes, you can zone focus the camera, which makes it pretty much the easiest manual camera in the world to operate.</p>

<p>Also, thanks for the excellent feedback! At this point, large prints aren't my thing. This is all for me, so 12 x 12 (18" x 18" matted) works out well. It would take me sometime to come up with the extra $400 (have to pay for a wedding and honeymoon). That said, I'll wait to see this first roll, and talk with the fiance about what the financial likelihood of a V700 is. Might see if I can find one used....</p>

<p>The biggest thing for me will be flexibility in my scans, so getting something like Vuescan is probably a must.</p>

<p>The film in these examples is Kodak 800 C-41 C/N.<br /><br />I scanned this at 2400ppi on the Canoscan 9000F, but here is the center of the scan at 100%. This would be a full image of about 8x10" at 300 dpi printing.<br /><img I love shooting medium format, and my main weapon of choice is an old Rolleiflex 2.8E. I use an Epson 750 scanner,

and it gives wonderful results. I get good A3 size prints from 35mm negatives, but as might be expected, results from

larger formats are even better. It's important to make sure the film is flat, and that the holder is the correct height. My

original holders needed a little adjustment to get the best results.

 

As mentioned, you'll probably get best results at f/8 or f/11.

<p>Well, I think I'm going to start with a Canoscan 9000F, and from there I'll decide where to go with it.</p>

<p>Just ordered a pro-pack of Portra 160, so I'll see how that handles. At how slow I have been lately in getting even digital processed, it shouldn't be an issue waiting to get my film back.</p>

<p>If you're not planning on printing over A3, I think buying the cheaper scanner is the way to go. Don't get me wrong - I love my Epson. But for me, 13x13 on a 16x20 page is my 'regular' size. $400 is a lot of film and developing (or two more days of honeymoon - congrats, by the way), and if I didn't print large I would have kept the money myself. It is a better product, but it looks like it's not a better product <em>for you</em>.</p>

<p>At a smaller size, I think you're right to go with a cheaper scanner, and the better software.</p>
