lex_jenkins
That's the lens that could well tempt me to commit to the Nikon 1 Series as my next (and primary) digicam. A fast midrange VR zoom would clinch it for me.
mike_halliwell
I guess the timing of the D600 release has completely overshadowed this very welcome lens.

I wonder if I can make an extension tube with through-contacts? That would make an amazing macro!
ShunCheung
I found Nikon's announcement schedule very strange. They announced the J2 about a month ago with the 11-27.5mm zoom, in the middle of the Olympics: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00aheB

However, that announcement did not include this 18.5mm/f1.8 standard lens, which is now part of the FX-format D600 announcement. Of course it is completely overshadowed, and of course this lens does not fit the D600. That is really weird.

Meanwhile, the V1 is in deep discount. You can get one with the 10-30mm VR lens for less than $600: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/823590-REG/Nikon_27504_Nikon_1_V1_Mirrorless.html
Given that the EN-EL15 battery itself is like $65 or so, if you have a D7000, D800, or D600, it is inexpensive to add a small camera that comes with a bettery that can be shared with some DSLRs. Keep in mind that I am referring to the V1 with EVF, not the lower-end J1.

While I am glad that Nikon is adding mirrorless lenses, their lens line up is still sparce.
jack flannery
Yup, a pioneer (me) took the arrow on that one. I like the V1 but it does have a couple of idiosyncrasies to it. The mode dial is a continuous pain.
mike_halliwell
I just hope the V2 (Not the demon of WWII England) has a SPAM dial and they introduce something truly wide.... an 8mm 2.8 optic??
michaelmiller
Hm, this does seem to be a very nice standard lens for the Nikon 1 system. Maybe even a must have. Even if you don't like using primes it can still come in handy in low light situations where the kit lenses aren't bright enough. From the reviews I've read so far, it seems like a sharp enough optic with good contrast and fairly neutral bokeh. Although the J1 is the low budget option in the Nikon 1 family, it delivers exactly the same image quality and autofocus performance as the V1. Its smaller and lighter too. The J1 can be had almost for free now! You can choose from the 10-30mm or the 10mm f/2.8 lens to come with it. A very good deal, if you ask me. borgis_karl_johan1
The upcoming 32mm f1,2 tele lens should be a real cracker if image quality holds. I find the V1 quite a nice camera, with some idiosyncracies as mentioned above.
lex_jenkins
That 32mm f/1.2 does look interesting, but I'm betting it'll be very $$$. The 18.5mm f/1.8 appeals to me since I'm comfortable with the "normal" lens on other cameras.

I've had the V1 for a little over a week and am very pleased with it. The well known quirks haven't put me off and are well overcome by the camera's strengths as a very quick P&S.
