htarragon
My K-5 and attached 55-300 slipped off the kitchen table and hit the floor. The K-5 seems ok, but the lens no longer focuses all the way. it seems to be coming out farther than normal (I can see the screw threads on the barrel and it won't retract all the way).
I'm planning to send it to CRIS. Is this the best plan? Is there anyplace closer to NYC that's reliable?
Should I just buy a new lens?
Thanks, in advance, for any help.
MattB.Net
Does CRIS have a standard flat rate? I'd price out some 55-300s to compare to the cost of fixing yours. Might be about the same to just replace. I got my DA L 55-300 for $250 on eBay.
htarragon
Thanks Matt,
I just looked on ebay and Adorama is selling the lens for $254 with a kit (lens accessories) but the lens mount is plastic. The regular metal mount is $429 at both Adorama and B&H. I had my credit card out and then I scrolled down to the description where, in boldface, they gave the info that the mount is plastic. I wonder if Adorama would give me something off on a trade-in. I'd have to call on Sunday.

Thanks again.
Howard
shots worth sharing
Bummer, Howard. Since this is probably not covered by warranty, third party repair (KEH or Eric Hendrickon) would also be options.
MattB.Net
I have the plastic mount one and it seems fine BTW. But I understand if that isn't what you want. You may also be able to put the metal mount on the DA L lens if you're brave enough. At least the stakes are relatively low.
htarragon
Thanks Dave, I was trying to remember Eric's name. Any thoughts on which might be the best one to choose for repair? (CRIS, Eric or KEH?)
Matt, I envision springs and screws exploding everywhere trying to change mounts and ending with two useless lenses. Lens disassembly and assembly is above my pay grade, but thanks for the thought.

The thought of sending the lens out is nerve-wracking so I've procrastinated about buying a shipping box. Actually, I've bought one, but it's the wrong size.
dshombert
Ouch. Condolences, Howard.
Not long ago, I bought an FA 31 Ltd. from a Pentax Forums member -- he thought it had some issues so he sent it to KEH. They, in turn, sent it to C.R.I.S, who fixed it. Whether that's routine for KEH, who knows, but if it is it'd be more efficient to just send it to C.R.I.S. in the first place. Maybe call KEH and ask them first - ?? I've had good luck with C.R.I.S., and pretty quick turn-around.
I've had the impression that Eric limits himself to film-era gear, but maybe that's wrong.
andrewg_ny
I believe in addition to the plastic mount, the DA-L lacks quick-shift full-time-manual focusing and doesn't include a bundled hood.
htarragon
I called Eric and he said he can fix it for about $200. He'll need parts. Sounds about right. I'm still nervous about mailing a lens, but major packing should take care of that.
htarragon
Just saw the lens, DA not DA-L, on Amazon for $359.99. Now what do I do? New or fix it for ~$200?
MattB.Net
I'd go for new and sell the old as an "as-is" item on eBay.
