Nikon S8100 Not Charging

Hello all,
So.. I purchased the Nikon Coolpix S8100 as a compact substitute for lugging around my DSLR everywhere. I have used it a few times, but when I went to charge it last, the indicator light didn't come on, and the camera did not charge.. I have contacted Nikon about this and am awaiting a response but I am wondering if anyone has any idea as to what is happening... If it is simply an issue with the battery or something more serious..

Thank you

Does the charger get warm to the touch? I guess you have the "Charging AC Adapter EH-68P/EH-68P(AR), ie Not the Mains Adapter or Battery Charger.

It might be a term I'm mis-reading but doesn't the Charging AC Adapter power the camera as well as charge the battery in-situ? If this is the case, does it work if you take the battery out and plug in the Adapter? I've known laptops that won't work if you leave the battery in with the charger/adapter attached.

Wasn't meant that way! It should get slightly warm to the touch, ie not stone-cold room temp.

Do you have a multi-meter? Should be safe to see if you're getting any volts OUT of the adapter?

Not sure I get the laptop bit? USB > battery?

It is unfortunate that the AC adapter that came with S8100 is not a stand alone charger. That is, it consists of the AC adapter, and the charger circuit in the camera.
The AC adapter charges the camera battery when the battery is inserted in the camera.
Also USB cable from a computer charges when the battery is in the camera. The USB port must provide charging current, but some ports do not provide sufficient power. Perhaps try a different port on your computer ?

I suggest you purchase a stand alone battery charger that will charge the battery outside of your camera.
Some of products are inexpensive like this one:
http://www.nikon-battery-charger.com/Battery-Charger/Nikon/Nikon-EN-EL12.html

... and perhaps your charger adapter will never get hot or warn, since it is not really a full feature charger. Your camera could get warm when you charge the battery in it.
