Canon 5D III High ISO Images Mini Review

Hi everyone! I just got my Canon 5D III the other day and was so excited I just had to take some pictures to try it out and give a little review of what I have found so far! I have to say… compared to the Canon 5D II I am very impressed with the camera so far. The AF is unbelievable and far exceeds the MK II and MK I! The Canon 5D III is super accurate, fast and will focus in the dark – literally…. The AF is definitely on level and may even exceed the 1D series. I have some images that were shot at ISO 102,000 and 51,000, but I haven’t had a chance to process them yet. I wanted to put something up for others to see, so I am posting images from ISO 12,800 to begin with and ISO 6,400 to follow. I will be adding more images and expanding my hands on review in the coming days.

Click on the following link to see RAW files and Jpeg Examples.

http://johncarnessali.com/lens-tests/3201

00aDm4-455063684.jpg.a9c106924d3ff652fde1c42283cced2a.jpg

My oh my! I never shot film rated more than ISO 400. When I got my 400D, I was elated that I could shoot at ISO 800 and, with proper exposure, get some very good noise performance. With my 5D2, I shoot at up to ISO 6400 without flinching (and make wedding album spreads from some of those images)....

...but this 5D3 is on a whole new level. Those ISO 6400 images look like the equiv. of ISO 200 film! That is some fantastic noise control. And with a whiff of LR NR, it just gets ridiculously good IMHO. I wasn't convinced I'd need to up the ante on the 5D2, but this new machine is well worth considering a trade in. I shoot a lot of low-light stuff at weddings.

I know Mark! I started with film, so I am amazed at how far we have come! I love the quality of the noise from the MK III as well. I have always loved the 5D series, but this version is at a new level.

I would still love to see other's high ISO picks!

John -- you are asking for picks -- I would choose either one of the two images you posted. Cannot pick between them.

Both are excellent samples of super high ISO from your 5D3. Were these shot raw and then lightly processed by you and with what software? For sure when large, 22MP image files are reduceded to tiny, small Web-sized image files of under 700 px, a lot of high ISO stuff looks great (even 6400 from a 7D).
