Scanning Negatives from Document Table

Recommended Posts

In searching for an Epson 1680 Scanner holder that will accept 110 negatives, I came across this from the Epson site:

Q: Is it possible to scan 110 negative on the Epson 1680? A:Yes. However, a 110 film holder is not available to scan this film size (16mm). To scan 110 film, place it face-down on the document table. (Your images and any wording on the film strips should appear backwards on the side that faces up). Be sure to position the film directly underneath the transparency unit window located in the scanner cover.

Well if this works, then why ever use a holder, even for other film? (I usually scan 4x5 or 120.) Will there be a significant quality difference?

There is a difference between "working" and optimal results. Keep in mind that the 1680 has a lens system that actively focuses. Therefore, within its focusing range, it can adjust for variances in film suspension height. Most flatbeds from Epson (including the 4870) and Canon do not have this capability. This issue is further compounded by the fact that many of these flatbeds ship from the factory with their lens not actually focused at the stated film suspension height. An additional issue with scanning off the glass is the increased chance for Newton Rings so scanning in a holder can help minimize this issue.
