This is demonstrably true, of course, and the web is full of good and bad examples of exactly that. Given that most photographs we see are low resolution web images, it's difficult to argue that we haven't already long ago crossed the threshold of usable image quality. Aren't these the *real* photographers, the hordes of iPhone and P&S snapshooters? 100 years from now, their body of work will document an age gone by, while my meticulously sharp prints will have faded to uninteresting flatness.
