joe_kallo
Arnold Newman gave a talk at my school the other night, and here's a shot from the event. Not long after I took this he looked up at me and said "nice camera"--so there's the Leica content (grin).<div></div>
alan_simon
Great image-you really captured his expression and I'm sure that he appreciated your Leica. As someone who 'schlepped' his 4X5 camera, lenses, lights, etc. as his assistant, I know that you and your students were in the presence of a master. stephen_jones4
That's great. He's a real hero of mine and you've certainly seem to have caught something of his personality. Slightly amused that he noticed you taking pictures with your stealthy little screw mount, but I guess you must have been quite close to him in fairness. todd frederick
Your photo has such a happy spirit to it. Very fine. I wish I could do as well with my little IIIC.
dpablo
What School...? Cool pic, although I think pictures need to be about more... It's just my opinion, but I feel like this board sometimes praises pictures that really aren't about much. The picture is well exposed and neat considering who the subject is, but to me it's simply just an average snap shot... This is just my opinion but I think it would do this board some good to admit when a pic is just so-so... Sorry, a bit cranky today... :) dpablo
fotografz
What a nice man he is. A pleasure to meet. IMO one of the greatest portrait masters of the 20th century. BTW, I have a signed print of the image shown in the book he's holding.
joe_kallo
Al, I would love to hear stories sometime about being his assistant. He was an incredibly nice guy, and a real pleasure to talk with. In particular, he was something of a breath of fresh air for me after spending lots of time studying some of the writings of the other greats (I'm a graduate student in philosophy and my specific area of study is aesthetics). He doesn't seem to have a "philosophy of photography"--he emphasized a real empathy for the subject as being what is key. When asked what types of cameras he prefered, he replied "one that makes pictures." When I say that it sounds kinda funny, but when he, with his resume, says it, it holds some weight. No 4x5 pun intended. As to it being a mediocre photograph, yeah I suppose so. I really meant it nothing more than as a snapshot of someone that I know a few people on the list hold in high regard. There is this odd feeling that one gets when trying to get a "good shot" of someone like Newman. . . Oh, and the school is Southern Illinois University Carbondale. We have a fantastic photography department. Joe
andy_piper2
Joe: I KNEW that stage trim looked familiar! I'm Saluki C&P 1976! Although I think the faculty from my era all have retired now(Swedlund, Gilmore, et al). Shoot, some of the STUDENTS from my era have probably retired! L-u-u-v the photo book and magazine collection at Morris. A.N. used Leica for some shots (mostly 21 Super-Angulon) in addition to his more famous large-format pictures. marke_gilbert
Marc, <P>My first thought when reading the title of this post was of your print (which is hung way too high by the way) ;)
