NEF no good in Photoshop Elements. OK in NX2

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,
I just bought a copy of PSE 9 and when I open a NEF file many of the edges are really jagged or staircased (which is a better term?) to the point that some the edges look like they're from Monkey Island :(
The strange thing is that it doesn't happen all the time. When I open the file and display at 43% the problem occurs, but if I display it at 50% the image looks fine.
No problem in NX2 though.
I'm using OSX 10.6 on an iMac with an i7 processor and 4GB of RAM.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Regards,
Spencer.

It's not because it's a RAW file, it's because PSE does weird things depending on your zoom level. If you use 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% it will look fine, anything else will look as you describe. I've noticed it on all versions of PSE, something to do with the algorithm it uses for displaying at those zoom levels

This is a Driver issue. PS "off loads" screen rendering to the video layer. On a PC, I would suggest updating the vid driver. Your best bet is to ask Adobe to try some adjustments. Steve already has your money and tends not to do much, unless it effects sales. Just think iPhone 4.

That was one advantage I had with a tower. I could buy any vid card I wanted, which support came from them.

On the high side, your files are fine; they just look bad on your machine.

Good Old Steve!
It certainly is weird. I've sent Adobe an email asking for suggestions. They have obviously spent too much time with the people at Apple as they are yet to confirm whether I am entitled to support or not - now that they have my money.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Updating video drivers and asking Adobe for support are not going to help you as this is a known quirk of Elements

since forever. Every version of pse I have ever used has done this. There are lots of hits if you google this issue, and

from what I can see the full photoshop doesn't have this problem. The solution is to use 25, 50 or 100% zoom only
