jimmy_m.
I have a Canon G2 with a 550EX mounted on it. It properly exposes in P, AV, and TV mode. When i switch to manual, and dial in my desired aperture (5.6) and shutterspeed (1/125th), It drastically overexposes my subject. Any reason why this is happening? I figured that with the E-TTL metering the flash would shut itself off once enough light has reached the subject. Any help would be great.

eosdoc
I read that Canon's G1 and G2 have incomplete flash compatibility. Especially with flash mistiming (e.g. 1/10-1/500) and causing full power flash in M mode. See:
http://www.botzilla.com/photo/G1strobe.html#wide
Apparently the problem is a design flaw, and was fixed in the G3 model. paul_nicol
With the G2 when you switch to manual it means just that,, you have to set your flash manually. E-TTL is not working in this mode on the G2 (Unlike the film cameras). The camera just triggers the flash.
jimstrutz
I have the G1 and always thought this was an odd way to go, but it is true. With the camera in manual mode, the flash fires full power unless you set the flash to manual and dial in less power. I prefer the way Canon does this with their film cameras. You set the camera to manual and the flash is still E-TTL unless you set the flash to manual as well.
gib
one other thing that might help or might not depending ---- is set your AWB on the G2 to Flash.
