fred_mueggelhopper
Could I use an SD card from a D5000 that has pictures on it in a D7000 without any conflicts? The pictures on the card have been saved elswhere, but I do not want to delete them, and still want to use the card in the D7000 body. Thanks for your help.
elliot1
Yes. They will be saved in a separate folder on the card and the original ones will remain their as well (as long as you do not reformat the card).
daverhaas
just don't reformat the card and you should be fine. The d5000 images won't show up on the D7000 and vice versa - so don't panic.

Dave
User_276104
I have to ask why you don't just buy another SD card, as cheap as they are. Starting with a freshly formatted card (in-camera) is the first step toward avoiding card problems.
Peter_in_PA
I wouldn't do it. I'd just buy a pair of cards (at least) for each camera.

Using a card in two different cameras sounds like a bad thing waiting to happen.

ShunCheung
If you do not want to delete those old D5000 images on that memory card, you cannot format that card on any DSLR, regardless of whether it is that original D5000, another D5000 or your D7000, etc.

I am not sure why you want to do that, but if that is indeed what you want, I suggest you should simply retire that card.
kohanmike
I've battled with a friend of mine about not leaving all his photos on the card forever, not wise, not efficient, certainly not a good idea to go between different kinds of cameras. As was said, SD cards are cheap. To keep the card working at it's best, it should be reformatted in the camera regularly. Also, in my experience, transferring the photos from the card to the computer is best done with a reader, not directly from the camera. And be sure you back up the computer. I have my photos on two different backups.
dan_brown4
If you keep the photos on the card forever, you have yourself a nice back-up to the computer. As cheap as memory has gotten, I might go that route.

Michael: How does reformatting a card keep it working at its best?

ray_dockrey
@Michael, if he ever loses his camera or the memory card gets corrupted he will understand why not to leave the photos on the card. Sometimes people just don't get it until a catastrophe happens.
Peter_in_PA
Yeah, leaving your photos on a memory card as a place to view them from, or as a place of main storage...

Please... just don't do that... I copy them to my mac and then back up to two (different manufacturer) drives, THEN format the card.
jay_poel
The OP stated he has made copies elsewhere in the original post. But I agree - 4GB SD cards can be had for as little as $7 CDN. Not sure why you would want to use it in another camera. A decent 8GB card is only $25.

I have an 8GB card in the camera and carry 2 extra 8GB cards. The only time I swap out is when I didn't get a chance to download them to my computer and plan on possibly filling a card that day. Being a hobbiest, the closest I've come is 360 shots (RAW +JPEG/Large Fine) at a karate tournament for my son. I think that was only about 5.5GB.
