bill_brown8
I'd have thought you would want to upgrade the body before spending that kind on money on that lens.
tony_defilippo1
I just used a rented 70-200 vrii on a D90 this past weekend for some sports photography. Same form factor as your D80 and it felt odd to have such a light camera on a huge lens but worked just fine.

If you are wondering about the lens paired with that sensor... I'm not sure how to answer, my D80 did great things with a 180/2.8, I'm sure with the more modern VRII zoom it will be spectacular up to the limits of that sensor.
Rene11664880918
Usually people are advice to upgrade the glass before the bodies. The bodies go obsolete within a few years but the glass remain useful. So I don't see anything wrong about using the lens with a D80.
The size is not problem at all. I used to have the 80-200 f/2.8 and I used it with my D80. Nothing wrong about the size.... just the weight was too much.... all metal...
I have never tried the 70-200 VRII but it is a high end lens and it should work great with any Nikon camera..... if you are willing to pay what it costs you shouldn't worry and you should just get it..... for sure you won't be sorry....
Michael R Freeman

I'd have thought you would want to upgrade the body before spending that kind on money on that lens.

That comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. If you upgrade the body, maybe you don't have any money left to buy the lens. Money gone, and no lens added to your bag. Surely this lens will perform perfectly fine on a D80, or any other Nikon DSLR current or discontinued. Last I checked compatibility was not limited to the D3s or D3x.
leicaglow
I'd much rather buy good glass.
ShunCheung
Version 2 of the 70-200mm/f2.8 AF-S VR is a top-notch zoom. It is going to perform well on any Nikon DSLR.

I think Bill Brown's point is that this lens is a bit of an overkill on the D80, which has an older AF module with only 1 cross-type AF point. To utilize the full potential of the 70-200 II, you are better off with a higher-end body such as the D7000 or D300S, etc. with a better AF module and perhaps even more pixels. But clearly a lot of people cannot buy such an expensive lens as well as a new body at the same time.

But in case you do buy a body and the 70-200 in the US, Nikon USA has a $400 rebate for certain combos: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00YDCX
As far as I know, both camera and lens must be on the same receipt. In other words, you need to buy them at the same time from the same store.
josef_bonnici
Thanks for all the messages. The point is that it is too expensive to change both lens and body at the same time.
elliot1
There is no need to change your body. IQ with the 70-200mm VRII will be great on any Nikon DSLR body, DX or FX. If you need fast, accurate AF, and/or need to shoot in low light, and/or want really nice blurred backgrounds, this is the right lens for you.
greg_lisi
Elliot hit it right on the button. I also have the 70-200 VRII (for a while now) and I still can't get over the IQ that comes from that glass. I use it on my D3 AND my D90 backup. Thanks to the advice of the guys on this forum, I stopped being nutty about when and how to upgrade bodies and focused more on glass. It took awhile to save but I don't regret one dime of it.
ShunCheung
Greg, it is easy for you to say that since you already have the D3. :-)

NAS aside, if your equipment starts to limit your photography, and you can afford it, it would be time to upgrade your equipment. In this digital age, when you have a limited budget as most of us do, generally speaking it is a good idea to upgrade your lenses first. Something like the 70-200mm VR II is going to last you many years under normal circumstances.

I'll upgrade my DSLR bodies when the new ones can give me "significantly better" images.

jay_olson_goude
Purchased this lens for use on my D200 - basically the same sensor as your D80. I've been pleased (but not surprised) with everything I've shot with this combination.
Here are some examples:
http://www.photojro.com/p740288140
If you can afford it, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Jay
http://www.PhotoJRO.com
