john_janunas1
I have a Canon 400mm 5.6 with a tripod mount ring A(W). It has a tendency to slip and rotate. I am wondering if there is any adjustment other than shimming the ring with masking tape?
PuppyDigs
Eventually the felt lining on the ring wears and needs to be replaced. Visit a fabric store, select your fav color of felt, cut to fit and glue on with fabric glue. I replaced it on my 1995 300 4L. I took about 30 minutes. The worse part was removing the old worn fabric.
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter

peter_j2
Hell, look at here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Tripod-Mount-Collar-A-W-Canon-EF-300mm-400mm-USM-/180594117895?pt=Lens_Accessories&hash=item2a0c3f8d07

$7.80 + FREE shipping (from Hong Kong, China)!

Some fabric places sell this felt lining by the foot and you have to pay more than what you really had expected to pay. You will have plenty of lining left over to fix other tripod rings and recoup your cost. :)
mbkissel
Craft stores often sell felt sheets with peel and stick adhesive backing. Peter, I don't know if I would trust that tripod ring. The old "you get what you pay for" adage sticks in my mind.
isaac sibson
I think it's actually a flaw with Tripod Ring A.

My 70-200 F4L and its successor 70-200 F4L IS have both been loose in my Ring A. The tripod ring has barely been used so it's not wear (unless the lifetime of the stuff is about 2 minutes).

My father's Tripod Ring A II locks up tight where mine is loose. I think there's a reason that canon produced the II.
