Lens advice

I am a big fan of indoor flash. The 430EX is a fine unit.

Not sure what a 580EX would bring to the table that the 430EX does not.

I hear good things about the 17-55; but I admit that I am biased against this lens. It just seems a bit pricey for an EF-S consumer grade lens. In the 17-55 range, IS is really not that useful if you photograph people (you need to keep the shutter above 45-60 to photograph people, and you can handhold at those speeds)

I would opt for the 17-40 or the 10-22. Both are cheaper lenses. I have the 24-105, and I am very happy with it (probably not wide enough for what you want)
