Ocean Isle Beach - K10d

Couple of weeks we headed out with family to Ocean Isle Beach which is on the coast of North Carolina. I still have my trusty K10d and my 2 lenses; FA50 and the kit lens version 1. These are just a few of the photos taken while my wife explored the area. All these were shot in RAW, converted to JPEG in Aperture with only a modest amount of contrast and saturation adjustment.
This first one is taken on on pier which juts out on to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. It's fairly new and mainly used by the locals for fishing. This photo was taken in early morning:

This next shot shows what was behind me from the first shot (at sunset). Hand held at 1/2 second so little of blur.
<a title="Last light... by Shaloot, on Flickr" href=" Last light... src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4085/5019084207_9e47eceb59_z.jpg" alt="Last light..." width="640" height="430" />
There were some people on the other side partaking in some fishin':

This next shot I liked cause I got a bird taking a dip in the water.

This was taken at the main pier of island, around sunset. Converted to b&w using the red filter option.
<a title="Main pier by Shaloot, on Flickr" href=" Main pier src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5019690150_7f5ae9efb6_z.jpg" alt="Main pier" width="640" height="432" />

And finally, since Mis was glad to see a picture of my better half in the "couples" thread, I thought I'd share a few shots of her. She was referred to as "Peaches" because of the blog we have; Peachesandcurry. A mix of the South and India if you will.
This one was taken at the main pier:
<a title="My sunshine... by Shaloot, on Flickr" href=" My sunshine... src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4092/5019086839_680208f0f3_z.jpg" alt="My sunshine..." width="432" height="640" />

This one at the smaller one. Fill flash through the pop-up flash,

And my personal favorite:
<a title="Golden Light by Shaloot, on Flickr" href=" Golden Light src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4145/4969626839_a8f0731ec4_z.jpg" alt="Golden Light" width="640" height="460" />

We plan this trip every year with the family, and this year was extra special because it might be the last one for a few years and it happened right after I was laid off. So the photography was very "therapeutic" for me and made me think about what's really important. I was also all ready to buy new gear but now I think I'm still happy with I have.

Very nice. I think you are doing just fine with the gear you have, by the way. There are some great images here. That b/w shot with the bird just hitting the water is nice. I like the shots of your wife that are backlit by the sun - I think you did the right thing not using fill flash on those, it gives it a sort of warm, hazy look that works for me.

I try to take a vacation or two a year with either the whole family or a few members. In years past we did beer fest in Montreal with my eldest siblings and their SO's. Or if that didn't work, Just For Laughs later in the summer. My wife decided this year she wanted to do the Outer Banks since it was our 10th anniversary, and that made it a great vacation for everyone including my "kid" brother and sister and the dogs. Vacations growing up were always fun, I see no reason to end them as adults. It[s a great excuse to spend some quality time together. Of course some families don't get a long well enough to spend a week together so it's definitely not for everyone.

Sorry to hear you were laid off. Enjoy the time off while looking for another job, if the finances work out it's not always a bad thing.

I like the soft haziness of the two back lit shots with your wife.

My favorite alternate shot is the black and white pier and then probably the vertical sunset with the fisherman.

BTW, we in reference to our Flickr emails, we ended up going to Corolla because Currituck County and chiefly corrola is most liberal with dogs on the beach and leash laws. I've never had a bad experience on the OBX, but this was truly excellent. Oh, and we did find good BBQ and some bad BBQ. Corolla Village BBQ is excellent, as my wife put it "the real deal". Traditional vinegar based, smothered with coleslaw.

As far as your wife, once you've met a southern girl there is no going back! ;-)

Nicely done, Somanna. I lived in NC (Fayetteville) for 6 years and visited the OBX quite often. And I agree with Justin that once you've met a southern girl there is no going back. I married a Georgia "peach", and we are still on our honeymoon 42 years later! :)

@Javier - Good question! I'm not going to ask her though lol! I wish I had your eye and guts for those street shots though, so to each his own!
@Frank B - Yes the gear I have is great majority of the time, it's just sometimes I wish I had either a wider or faster tele... oh well. The photo with the fill flash surprised me in that how many people liked it, but I agree with you on the others.
@Justin - Glad to hear your trip went well. I have some friends from Texas who will be going to Corolla in a few weeks and I must tell them about that BBQ joint.
@Robert and Nick - My personal favorites are the b&w pier shot and the last photo of my wife. Her favorite of this series is the sunset fishermen shot. She of course doesn't like the photos of her!
@Tom and Justin - yes, totally agree with you guys! ;-)
