nathangardner
It'll go in the back of old tube TVs. Good luck getting that on a tripod.
JDMvW
To wit:

Canon has announced it has developed the world's largest CMOS sensor measuring 202 x 205mm. Approximately 40 times the size of Canon's largest commercial CMOS sensor, it captures images with 1/100th the amount of light required by an SLR camera. Its advanced circuitry allows video recording at 60 frames per second with 0.3 lux illumination that according to the company is roughly one-half the brightness of a moonlit night. There is currently no information about the sensor's resolution. This follows last week's development announcement of Canon's 120 megapixel 29.2 x 20.2mm APS-H CMOS sensor.

john_tran14

Good luck getting that on a tripod.

Good job, Canon. I would love to mount that sensor and a 200mm (35mm equivalent) on top of my car. I suggest that Canon would have a remote LCD inside the car (for live view and control).
faysal
Not everything canon does needs to be for handheld photography. Imagine that applied to astronomy, medicine, or physics.
mars c
An insider told me that , It not only functions as a sensor, But also as a solar panel that could charge it's own battery.

pmind
Perhaps, a digital back for that old 8x10 that has been gathering dust? How expensive could it possibly be?!
William Kahn
Paul may have something. This could signal a rebirth of the large format view/field camera...
steven_crist
If you've ever shot 4x5 or 8x10 film this should be a snap. For the "point & shooters" it would be total culture shock.
alan_bryant1
It's about 8x8 inches, so it's a crop-frame sensor for 8x10 shooters.

However, the thing can also shoot *video*. Has there ever been a large-format motion picture camera?

mattb1
IMO this and the last high MP chip are great news. Maybe LF isn't dead, maybe MF will become more affordable sooner. Very cool. Glad to see they are interested in pushing the limits of engineering, should prove to be a good business move for them.
JDMvW

Perhaps, a digital back for that old 8x10 that has been gathering dust?

Heck, a smaller version would be perfect for a Pentacon 6TL back or a Kiev or even, think of it, a Hasselblad.
My largest large format however is 5x7, I'll have to hunt around for a larger one while I'm saving for one :)

How expensive could it possibly be?!

Right now? Beyond the dreams of avarice. Dinky little medum format digital backs are as high as US$30,000 right now, I think. I note that the RED camera company has a disclaimer :]

Specifications, prices and delivery dates are subject to change. john_tran14
Since it's going to be pretty expensive, I think, there is no need to mount it on my car; the car would be included in the package
25asa
IMAX is as close to a large format motion picture camera as one will ever see. That said what kind of processor and hard drive would be needed for video from such a sensor? Could imagine what the cost of this thing would be.
stefan_deisz
If it is a 20MP sensor with large individual sensors, any current processor and harddrive will be capable of dealing with it.
